Can I bolt a JDM 1.6 head to a US spec 1.6 block
Hey all! I’m new to the NA Miata platform and have a couple questions. I bought a 90’ Miata with a completed JDM 1.6 swap with a hole in the block.
the swap has roughly 40k miles on it to my knowledge
My goal for this project is to get the car running as cheaply as possible to make a seat time car. My other project is “done” as of this year and I’m challenging myself to build a seat time car with as little $ as humanly possible.
Can I bolt a complete JDM 1.6 head (intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rail, etc) to a US spec 1.6 bottom end?
or
Is it cheaper to just buy a complete US 1.6 and convert it back to US spec? But id love to keep the head for the couple extra HP and because the top end is in great shape overall.

Yes.
Ive always chuckled at the sellers really heavily
pushing the “ZOMG JDM!!!1!!!” for a 1.6 because as far as I’ve ever known or can tell, they are identical to the US spec 1.6 engines.
Edit; The above should only apply to an NA6 engine; I do know NB’s in the rest of the world got a newer 1.6 that’s got some of the BP4W features like solid lifters, those did come with a different intake. The 949 guys swapped one into a car hoping the shorter length and more rearward center of gravity would yield better turning but I don’t think they could hit their power goals for it.

^^^ What monkey man says. If your JDM is an early 90's vintage then no problem at all.
I recently used a 1999 JDM 1.6 L head and block in my ice racer, so no swap involved.
But I had to swap out the intake cam for a 1990's or so cam, because it did not have a connector for the distributor used with my 1989 Mazda 323 GT turbo ECU and engine management system.
The old 323 GT intake and exhaust manifolds bolted up fine, so no worries with that for you.
Not sure if there are any head differences that matter. If there are, it would be in lining up the oil galleys.
