Can the intake gaskets be reused?
I did a search but didn't come up with the answer.
I took apart the intake on my 99 and was wondering if I can reuse the 3 metal gaskets: - engine to manifold - between 2 halfs of manifold - manifold to throttle body Knowing Mazda, they're probably cost an arm and a leg ;) |
they usually come off flattened and warped. I've never had good luck reusing one.
|
It's like $8 at rockauto might as well get a new one
|
I hope they can. I've had mine off and back on half a dozen times.
|
If in doubt use a smear of non hardening gasket sealant.
I got mine from mazda in the UK and it was only £11. |

my 1.6 one definatly couldnt and trust me i tried silicone and all that shit is a 1 use item atleast on a 1.6 i dunno what kind of magic y8's uses on his 1.8 but apparently he has a diff gasket than us so anything is possible for him.

When I took my intake manifold off, the gasket (engine to manifold) was all rusted and chipped. I still reused it and have noticed no problems, although I bet it is probably leaking.
Your best bet is to replace what you can. It is better to do it now instead of realizing later that you probably should have done it. Same theory applies to women |
Yeah, i usually replace mine. If time isn't an issue, buy a new one. If it does get fubar'd It will be a pain to replace it again if you ask me.
|
Reused mine, its the metal type like 3 layers i believe or something like that.

+2, I reused my stock one a half dozen times in just a month or two when I was playing hot potato with my head. I think I did eventually end up with a new one though, but it worked fine with the old gasket. Wipe some of the gritty oily mess that might be on it and slap it back on.
|
the later model ones must be coated in something delicious. sure they oil can a little when pulled off, but never so much that they wont go back in easily.
|
I used a new one, just for piece of mind....that and I wanted the old one to use on my spare build head for gasket matching.
|
Instead of using silicone, use copper gasket spray.
|
Manifold to head, replace it. LIM to UIM, reuse it. UIM to TB, replace it.
|
@Frank: you can buy them OEM but cheaper than Mazda at I.L. Motorsport...
I.L. Motorsport - MX-5 Tuning, Zubehör und Ersatzteile There even is a shop in Nederlands but I couldn't find the damn gasket... I.L. Motorsport - MX-5 Tuning, Zubehör und Ersatzteile |
Manifold to head=RTV on my car
2 half's of manifold=old used metal gaskets TB to manifold= old used gasket too This is on a 99 head. No leaks thus far. |
