CAULK ASK FUNK!!! ARRGHGHH (diff upgrade tragedy)

COCK ASS FUCK. So my car was supposed to be ready today with a nice fresh rear end, prepped and eager for burnouts and launch control set up.
Instead, I got a call from the mechanic with- "we are still waiting for seals for that torsen you're installing". I was like WHAA??? considering I gave him what I thought was a rx7 clutch diff to swap out with the factory LSD that was in my car. And so I drive to the shop to lay eyes on what the fuck was up. So, this is what I saw. This is what came out of my car: Attachment 241571 WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS THIS? Then, he shows me the ring and pinion that came out of my car: The ring had a lot of small chips in it, like this: Attachment 241572 And the pinion had been lightened: Attachment 241573 Attachment 241574 Then I looked inside the clutch diff: Attachment 241575 Uggghh Attachment 241576 So I broke a tooth on my pinion gear. My shit still worked though- worm gears were ok and clutch diff still engaged. Unless I was doing one wheel burnouts and didn't know it. ANYWAYS what is that diff? These are the markings on the diff that was in my car: [URL=http://imgur.com/4yZT3.jpg] Attachment 241577 What is this thing? Is it a rx7 diff? Is it a Tochigi fuji LSD? See here for pics of that: http://www.miata.net/garage/diffguide/index.html It looks a whole lot like one. This is what I gave my mechanic- what I thought was a rx7 clutch type diff. http://www.solomiata.com/images/small/RX7LSD2.jpg He told me it was a torsen. Was he incorrect? I thought with all the miata torsens you could see the gears inside. WTF is going on? I need some answers please. And BTW I will now be cryotreating my r&p. |
Since you have an '03, it's pretty obvious that your OEM LSD would be a T-F, yes.
Post a smaller photo of the LSD you're putting in and I'll tell you what it actually is. Or you can just throw the piece of shit Rx7 LSD away/sell it to someone who drag races and get something that will let the car handle, like a Torsen or an OS Giken. |
Yes I guess it is a TF. It does have the hexagonal center pin like this:

OK so do these TF diffs wear out? I really want my diff to be launch-sturdy which is why I wanted the RX7 diff. BUT I will just use the TF diff if it is better.
ORRRRR should I go for a welded open diff? I can get one for free. |

Or maybe if I just weld the driveshaft to the axles I would have more reliability. ?

Mount a tire directly to the driveshaft. Then you can do donuts like a boss.
