Change your engine mounts!

Just a friendly encouragement for those of you who plan on doing this soon to get to it sooner rather than later. See pics.

I was taking out my old mounts in prep for the new shortblock and already had the MS mounts to go in before my old engine gave up the ghost. Left mount is passenger side and right is drivers side. For reference, my car has just over 100K miles and was boosted for about 10K of that.

Yup. Tom, did you ever have any problems shifting?

Loki047 08-17-2007 02:52 PM

Hmm motormounts, the longest job i ever had

socal pat 08-17-2007 02:55 PM

+1 here. I ordered the Mazda comp units from FM when I knew I was going to pull the motor. I did it just to maybe help the 2-3 shift under WOT. Once I got the motor out I was glad I ordered them! I also had a bit over 100k miles and one side was badly split.

are the mounts the same for 1.6 and 1.8 cars? Any tips on who offers the best price?

Loki047 08-17-2007 03:10 PM

Mazda Motorsport does.

miatamania 08-17-2007 03:14 PM

Great mounts too...bit of a bitch to put in. lol, I would have loved to have had the motor OUT before trying to put those bastards on.

Night and Day difference.

Actually, no, but definitely noticed more engine "shake" compared to other miatas. I ordered the mounts after the dyno day last year when Bruce said that my motor was rocking all over the place on the dyno.

Planet Miata also has decent prices on the mounts.

SamS 08-17-2007 03:28 PM

Best price I found for non-racers was racing beat. I have 120k on my car and my old mounts were fine. I also couldn't feel any difference with the competition mounts.:dunno: Then again, I couldn't feel any difference from my FM frame rails either. :gay:

Braineack 08-17-2007 03:30 PM

mine still looked 100% so i didnt bother, since im a cheap ass.

The rubber parts are the same. The metal parts are not. Hustler you should sign up for MazdaComp if you haven't already.

I am planning on going with standard OEM motor mounts for the "cushy" ride coupled with MazdaComp diff mounts to ensure easy 2-3 shifts.

My current, original mounts are in fine shape. I checked. Just under 60k on the car, with about 10k of it boosted.

cjernigan 08-17-2007 03:39 PM

For those looking for something stiffer. I believe MMR-direct.com sells the solid mounts. They're pretty cheap too. I don't want to deal with the extra NVH of a solid mount though.

miatamania 08-17-2007 04:19 PM

I couldn't imagine a solid mount...

on the 1.8 the MM ones aren't supposed to be bad...the NVH on the 1.6 cars (mine included) is very noticeable.

kotomile 08-18-2007 01:28 AM

I hated my MMRs so much I traded someone on RD for thier used Mazda-comps. Those are sooo much nicer on the ears (the MMRs rattle and vibrate the shit out of the car). The Mazda-comps are only 40% stiffer than standard and are very, very liveable.

akaryrye 08-18-2007 02:05 AM

Mazda-comp motormounts here, I like em a lot and dont really notice any negative effects, I guess the engine/tranny just feels a little bit more connected to those two rubber doughnuts in the back. MMR Diff. Mounts will be going in someday, but for now sit above my computer until that day I pull the rear end again, shim the RX7 diff, and install the 3.9 ring/pinion.

Arkmage 08-18-2007 10:53 AM

my stockers were totally toast when I swapped motors at 112K miles (NA). so.... you boosted folks are bound to have fucked up mounts.

geromichi 08-18-2007 11:09 AM

i used mazdaspeed comp ones and it really made a difference especially when your running coilovers, you really feel that it's alot smoother =)

magnamx-5 08-18-2007 12:08 PM

I like my MMR's though the vibration is more pronounced i know the motor is solidly there.

bradh88 08-18-2007 09:54 PM

how hard are the mount to put in? would i be able to put them in with basic tools and a couple jacks/jackstands?

Loki047 08-18-2007 11:43 PM

yeah, jsut need two jack stands and a jack, with a block of wood. An extension is very helpful
