Cut rear bumper

I got bored last weekend and decided to do a little aero-work. Cut the rear bumper (skin and inner bumper) which should help a little at reducing lift at the rear. The bumper always looked like a sail seen from the underside so I hope this will not catch as much underbody air as it used to. I will be working on a diffuser soon too. Probably some riveted aluminum sheets starting at the diff and curving up like an Elise diffuser.

It's cut straight, the muffler hangs a bit off so it looks like the bumper is a hackjob but IRL it looks pretty good.

I originally planned to cut it higher, but I liked how it turned out even with the cut out for the exhaust on the passenger side.
Just shows my enthuza exhaust peeping through. The longer I look at it, the more I like it

Man, you can barely tell in the pics, if it weren't for the muffler peeking I wouldn't be able to tell (since the car is black). Maybe it's my monitor.
I did this too, exactly the same cut, and noticed the same thing with the muffler. It doesn't bother me terribly but I may yet paint the muffler itself black.

How come lots of you guys cut the rear bumper? Is it aesthetically pleasing to you, or do you really do it for airflow?
Just something about it doesn't look right to me. But in any case Oscar, nice to put a car to the name. I don't recall ever seeing your miata before.

I tore mine right in the middle, so this looks a lot better than the tear did. I also find it aesthetically pleasing, if there's an aerodynamic bonus, then all the better.

I think both Oscar and Cspence did a nice job with that. Looks sharp. Hopefully helps. Doesn't look 1/2 *** at all.
Savington that might be a touch too far. Just a touch. I remember not too long ago that car was pretty! Your track addiction's making it fast but fugly.

^form follows function, therefore savington's car is beautiful.
Nice cut on the bumper. That's the same as the first cut I did on mine way back when... I've since gone much higher and done the Elise diffuser. Looks good though!
