Difference in turbo vs non turbo 6 spd trans?
While shopping for a 6 speed trans I found a place that has a turbo and a non turbo trans. Is there any difference between the two?
Thanks! |
To my knowledge, there is no difference.
Curious to know what price you were quoted though. |
i thought I heard the turbo trans was shot peaned or something.
|
Aren't they both the same trans from the RX-8?
Edit: I'd heard that too, the shot peaning... |

working on it......
|
sorry it took so long.....
http://members.aol.com/solomiata/Drivetrain.html it talks about 5 speed turbo trans. but thats all i could find in my attention span while watching the Rangers KILL the Flyers. maybe ill look it up more in detail later. does that work? |
I have a '99 AE 6 speed at 300 RWHP, no problem... All the six speeds are tough. And for the record, no information exists about the N/A 6 speed not being shot peened. My suspicion is that they both are... If not, disassemble and shot peen it. No big deal.

how much can shot peening help?
if i was to make a guess i would have to say that both are shot peened, reason being, why would mazda go backand shot peen a transmission thats already proven to be more than adequate...you know? |
I wouldn't be surprised either way, seeing as the MSM has larger axles than the non turbo cars. And the axles on the standard 7" diff are more than strong enough for a double stock power car.
|
again, good point...

a question for you guys:
I just put a 2002 SE on hold. I am very familiar with the M1, not with the M2 yet. How much do the 2002 SE wheels weigh? Has anyone found a place to get a set or a single one quick? One of the wheels looks like it hit a pot hole. Also, what is the difference between the 6 speed SE and the regular for 2002? Is this 6 speed also a little beefed up? Thanks for the help. |

Thanks for the help. www.car-part.com The six speed is always stronger than the stock 5 speed, and by a significant margin. Broken six speeds are rare. Only 1 or 2 broken ones have been reported thus far on the net. Mark |

I just looked up the 6 speed internal parts in MazdaEPC and the answer is yes, the turbo has a different gear set than the non turbo.
Example: 99-05 non turbo 2nd gear is part Y601-17-251, retail $188.55 04-05 turbo 2nd gear is Y611-17-251, retail $191.90 I would interpret this data as the turbo trans has peened gears and the non turbo car does not. The Torsen LSD in the turbo car is also completely different than the non turbo LSD. |

Up for grabs: For pickup in Louisville, Ky - 2000, 85k mile, 6sp, will include shifter if you ask nicely, $600. 800-828-1075 |
04-05 MSM rear end is a 4.10 whereas the 02 SE is a 3.90. When i first got my 02SE, i though the 6spd was going to feel short for having 250rwhp....... but it doesn't. ANd it helps that i have a 7500rpm redline :) (MSMs redline at 6500)
I also hear that the turbo 6spd was slightly beefed up...kinda like how Mazda beefed up the 1.8 5spd trans. |
