for the most part, they are the same. they added a double cone synchro to 2nd gear in 94. doesn't make it any stronger.

well my 94's second gear is slightly less notchy then it was in my 92 but it could also just be the previous owners shifting ability.

Ben is correct.

That's what i get for listen to one source rather than many.

Local Miata "Guru" .. um .. yeah "Guru".. told me that the change was made in 95 after tranny issues started happen when they switched to the 1.8.

This appears to be incorrect info.

I'm going to raise the BS flag with him after work today.. heh..

I would interpret this data as the turbo trans has peened gears and the non turbo car does not.

The Torsen LSD in the turbo car is also completely different than the non turbo LSD.
Interesting... Obviously it didn't cost much to add shot peening to the mix then.

Question now is, how much stronger are they?

Mark, have you experimented with different tranny fluids to see which one appeared to perform the best? I finished my 6-speed swap, just using generic 75w90 gear oil to put some mileage on it to clean it out, then I was going to run Amsoil 75w90 Severe Gear like I did with the 5-speed. It's nice I don't have to sweat the turret oil fill, and can fill the tranny through the turret instead of spewing the nastiest of stinky lubes all over myself and the driveway.

No, I'm not that ----... I simply grab the container that says Mobil One full synthetic and in Mobil I trust. Simple as that.

The six speed is always stronger than the stock 5 speed, and by a significant margin. Broken six speeds are rare. Only 1 or 2 broken ones have been reported thus far on the net.

Good to know. I took a test drive, and it sounded to me like there was a slight hum coming up from below the shift lever. I then learned that the owner replaced the engine a few months prior at a nearby shop. my guess is that that sound deadening material and that rubber wheather cover under that leather shift boot was lost and not replaced by the local shop.

Have any of you had experience with this before? Has anyone heard this sound?
