Does anyone know what this is??

This is in my engine bay and I’m not sure what it even is. It’s Mitsubishi but the clip with the item number on it is broken so I can’t even look it up. I’m taking my engine apart and I was wondering if I need to put this back. I took a picture of the actual object and the plug that goes into it. It's a solenoid. Has something to do with fuel pressure on hot starts. If you have the OEM ecu I would keep it.

If you're stand-alone it isn't used.

More info in this thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquir...olenoid-59139/

thank you, I have a megasquirt in so I’m just gonna leave it out.

EGR vacuum solenoid i believe

SpartanSV 06-26-2018 02:35 PM

The vacuum line routing would tell us for sure, but it looks like this guy to me.

thats an EGR solenoid, you wont need that anymore

It is NOT the egr solenoid.

I just took this pic of the solenoid on my 97. It mounts on the intake manifold and has a vacuum line running to the fuel pressure regulator. Doesn't matter for OP as neither will be used with a stand alone, but I wanted to be clear for anyone seeing this in the future.

actually it IS the egr solenoid. lol. No really it is, sorry to disappoint you. It sits on the back of the intake manifold right next to the egr valve. The fuel pressure regulator should have one line running to it from the intake manifold.

here is a link to an aftermarket dorman EGR solenoid. Its that exact part

people with NBs and hot restart issues should consider integrating them into the ECU.

Look at the applications for that part. It isn't even for a fucking miata.

Red is the solenoid OP was asking about. His pic is identical to the solenoid in my pic which shows the location on the intake manifold.

Yellow is the location of the egr solenoid(s) on MY 97.

EGR solenoid on my 97.

Braineack 06-26-2018 06:05 PM

its a 3-way solenoid -- there's like 3 or 4 in the engine bay: fuel pressure reg, egr valve, purge, and VICS/VTCS.

is still not THE egr valve, it's used in conjunction with it.

Good to know. Info was sparse. Is the idea just to change fuel pressure while cranking?

Braineack 06-26-2018 06:07 PM

yeah it can keep the fuel pressure higher during cranking if the regulator stays at atmospheric instead of seeing vacuum... that's much assumption at least.

GreyMiata 06-26-2018 11:54 PM

Thanks again guys, that has cleared it up. I just swapped in a 99 head on my 94 and trying to just clean up the engine bay a little while putting everything back together. I'll leave it off and see if I have any hot start issues like brain said.

Might want to clean your engine bay it's dirty AF.

It's sanding dust from high build primer friend. Would be pretty silly to hose down the car before I finish it. Thanks for the concern though.

No problem buddy, good luck with your build.
