I have a nice set of BBS RAs that I'm looking to stick on my Miata. The only problem is that my current studs don't stick out far enough to get ANY safe thread on... Probably half of a conventional nut, at best.
So, I'm looking for... Fuck, how do I describe this... MS paint FTW! Attachment 198145 The "proposed device" is threaded on the inside and snugly fits the wheel stud, though not nearly as "puffy" as a conventional nut, with the hex head on the outside. Kind of like a cap on a bottle of water, only much longer and inflated at the end to hold the wheel on. I don't really know how to describe it any better, does such a thing exist if you get what I'm talking about? |

They make other narrow lugnuts, often called "tuner lugs" that major autoparts stores carry. You need to make sure that whatever lugnut you are using has the same taper as the holes on your wheels.

Well...You would have the larger portion as far away from the contact of the few threads that are holding it as the weight can be,causing the nut/stud to deflect.Coupled with vibration,Loose nut.I deal with fasteners all day long,Thats what would happen,you need to have at least 1.5x the dia. of the threads sticking out the other side of the nut or engaged in a fastener.Next time try a little more polite tone.Oh Btw that would be inertia

(G) I'm picturing extended studs w/ tapered "tuner lugs" (i.e., those that can reach into those pain-in-the-butt openings on fancy wheels. A lot of the tuner lugs are longer than the stock "acorn nuts", giving a longer length of contact thread patch. I think we're both in agreement, I was just picturing extended studs + tuner lugs. |
I know that some sanctioning race bodies require a longer stud with appropriate lug nuts. I thought the reason was to have more threads contacting the nut, and so inspectors could see the stud. I find it hard to believe that having a longer stud would not be safe, as long as all components fit properly.
