engine lift points - am I screwed?

I plan on removing my engine in less than a week, but I just realized I removed the lift points a long time ago..

1. Do I need them?

2. Has anyone removed an engine w/o them?

3. If I need them, can anyone loan me theirs?

:sadwavey:

You can make your own with some bolts and pieces of chain.

kotomile 11-08-2007 01:10 PM

Hmm, didn't think of that..

Anyone know the thread of the bolts?

Braineack 11-08-2007 01:11 PM

m10x1.5 iirc.

neogenesis2004 11-08-2007 01:55 PM

that is correct.

kotomile 11-08-2007 02:10 PM

Awesomeness! Thanks!

I got the bit and tap from you the other day too, neogen, gracias!

neogenesis2004 11-08-2007 02:12 PM

send it back to scott when you're done.

kotomile 11-08-2007 02:14 PM

but of course!

dont lift by loose bolts or you'll be one unhappy camper. make a flat plate like the original lift point if you can.

why: the bolts wont support the weight well in bending. they support it by clamping the hook to the motor and using that clamping force (tension) to prevent relative movement of the two.

Braineack 11-08-2007 03:30 PM

most engine levers come with plates instead of hooks, just bolt them to the head. that's what I did.

cjernigan 11-08-2007 03:31 PM

Use a bolt with a large washer and a couple chain links. It will clamp to the head fine.
Most of the engine hoists i've worked with had the metal plate tabs on the chains to bolt to the motor already.

Edit.Beat me to it scott.

our motors are fairly light... I lifted directly off the bolts and didn't have a problem. The moment arm is pretty short so it's not too big a deal lifting such a light load.

I guess if you dont drop it... i just had bad visions of Ben's new head.

So Summit was selling this little $13 dealy that's basically a length of chain with two bolt-on tabs on the ends, so I got that. Now I just gotta get the bolts.

Oh, I ordered an oil pan gasket and it came in today. It's two curved gasket fragments (about 4" long) and two tubes of silicone in a box.. is that right?
