I've got one of those (big driver's side one) coming too. Then I'll make an educated decision by laying them on the hood. :gay:

I plan on venting my hood above the turbo and maybe sticking a naca duct near the front of it to force cool air on it.
Anybody thought about stuff like this? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...150+%2D166380+ or done it? I know there's a million ricerboi stickon vents out there, it's hard to find real vents. :( |
ABS. I think it would melt from turbo heat.
+1 on it being tough to find a proper vent. |
yeah, it's nearly impossible.i've been looking for a naca duct for a while now but all of them are clearly not functional, sucks. do what scc did and make your own naca duct out of wood, don't know how well that would work. i'd try it but i don't have the skills. i don't have any skills :crx:

I've been thinking about just buying the fm hood.
|
+1 on the fm hood, they've already done the research on the best places for vents, and if not buy then copy their design, seems possible

Well, after trying some things in this department before I find an extraction hood or some venting options, figured I'd post some results.
This is on my '95 with an older FMII turbo kit. No a/c, no ps. I have TSIs, a PWR radiator, and no undertray. Normal street driving around 60mph keeps coolant at 201-208F and air temps at 93-97F. Temp readings after 12-15 PSI boosted runs starting at 70-80mph for all of this. First test was my base, I had a honeycomb insert in the mouth. Wide openings, but evidentally not wide enough, more on that later. Results: Coolant: 215.6F Intake Air: 104F Second test, I removed the weather stripping on the top of the firewall just to see what might happen since there has been a huge debate there. It apparently did help just taking it off and having no undertray. I'm not doing hood risers, not big on that look, but there must still be some room for air to go out without them. Results: Coolant: 208.4F Intake Air: 100.4F Third and final test so far, I removed the honeycomb insert. Results: Coolant: 203.1F Intake Air: 96.8F Now I want an extraction hood, preferably the Stage21 hood or similar, if I get one, I'll put the weather stripping back to see what happens as well. Also, I'll be adding a fan where the a/c fan would be, I want to redo the intercooler, the old design is outdated, and not as efficient in helping other components as I feel it could be, because while IATs are in great shape, CLTs are still higher than I think they should be with the "improved" flow. |
hustler- I think you'll need some kind of extractor to get the heat out if you're tracking the car. My buddy (CSR on m.net) made his own for that very reason. FM makes it easy for those with the dough.
BSRProducts.com has a bunch of ducting and vent solutions. |
heh, I just realized that I forgot to bid on those Z vents.
|
I'll either have a spare TA or a spare Z vent. :D |
:x: Z vent
I'm a gonna take a look for a 280z forum... |
There's a pretty ghetto Z car with decent vents sitting in the parking lot outside my building...I don't think they'd be missed...want me to grab 'em for ya Ilovetruenos style?

Can't remember if these have been suggested or not. I've come very close to buying them several times. Now I have the stage 21 hood that was on the group buy. Haven't installed it yet, acually haven't installed a hood period, been only driving the car 2 to 3 times a week for boost / fuel tuning, and keep having small problems pop up, so leaving the hood off has worked well for me. Have to watch out for rain but ceratinly hasn't been a problem lately. I might end up selling the stage 21 hood just not sure how it fits in with my decidedly ghetto car. |

Yeah I thought they were overpriced also. there's a hotrod shop near me that I've been meaning to visit. I bet they could make a pair of those vents for a third of that cost. One thing about those vents is they have a link to a template on that site. and the size fits very well on each side of the hump. I would like to have a more narrow rectanular one to place bwtn the radiator and the motor also. something like maybe 5x 20 inches. Rotor send me a pm and I'll keep your contact info in my pm library. I just rode a motorcyle back from griffin, ga for my wife yesterday, 350 mile in 90 to 100 degree temps.

any drawbacks to just running a blanket on the turbo?
|
cooks the oil etc. ceramic caot is very effective though. Still a vented hood is a very nice addition, i plan on one eventualy.

I have the louvered panel off my old home hvac unit...
