Hey guys, I will get right to it. I have a 90 NA6, with a moderately healthy engine. I’ve been working by *** off to afford whatever I’d need for this, so help a brother out. I need your experience and a second opinion on how I shall be going about this.I have a 1.8 97 engine sitting in my garage with about 70k miles JDM, the transmission and ecu came with it. I am planning on rebuilding the engine using (https://www.flyinmiata.com/fm-engine...kit-94-97.html ). I also will check on the transmission that came with the engine. I will be upgrading the clutch to (https://www.flyinmiata.com/transmiss...ut-gasket.html ). The Rear main seal will also be changed with a new one (https://www.flyinmiata.com/rear-cran...l-1990-05.html ) I shall buy the conversion kit (https://www.flyinmiata.com/1-6-to-1-...rsion-kit.html ) and give it to the garage that will be doing my swap, my engine mounts are new so I don’t think I’ll be needing to change them. Note, I have no clue how much this will cost me and am terrified of knowing. But I am willing to wait until I have the amount needed, this being the last step. I was thinking of reusing the same headers/downpipe/exhaust system I have on my 1.6. I will be getting a new slave cylinder (https://www.flyinmiata.com/clutch-slave-cylinder.html ).What do you guys think of all this? Anything I am missing? Are there Upgrades I should be doing at this point? I have wilwoods brakes but I am waiting for the engine to be in, to make the swap on those. I have HSD coils on and Blackdiamonds which I love, but think I’ll need to change for the brakes. I am also buying myself an engine mount, to work on the engine itself. I will be talking with flyingmiata to see if they can give me a deal on all these purchases, since it will need to be shipped and cost me a fortune. If they don’t give me a decent deal or they don’t care, I’ll be buying my stuff from a local guy who gets everything at cost price and will only buy the essentials (conversion kit) from flyingmiata. Note, I am trying my best to avoid having to tune the engine, because it’s insanely expensive up here. Sorry for the long read guys and my mistakes, I can’t thank you enough for your time.

any reason you dont want to do turbo? also 1.6 exhaust header wont fit a 1.8.

 

I wouldn't rebuild a 70k mile engine, especially if it's just a stock rebuild. Simple maintenance should suffice. Timing belt, water pump, external gaskets/seals. Conversion kit is fine. You need a 1.8 exhaust manifold and catalytic converter but you can keep the rest of your exhaust.

 

Great advice guys! I am looking into going forced induction, but first i want to be sure the engine runs like new. Once the engine is ran for a couple of miles i will be going turbo. I am worried of putting a turbo on the 1.8 and having it blow or start leaking from everywhere.

 

Flyin Miata is pretty expensive. It seems you are on a tight budget and might consider other options for some of the parts.

I added a turbo to my 1.8 when it had 130,000 miles. Then took it to the track and ran it hard for several years. A secondary problem caused by me killed it and then I rebuilt it.

What others have already posted. It is a better bang for a buck setup on the market. The only thing is I don't ship to Canada, so you would have to find a place in Vermont to ship it to and then drive across the boarder and pick it up.
