FM Extractor hood has been discontinued

I called today because I was searching on their site and saw that it wasn't up anymore. I thought it was a good looking hood, so I wonder why it was discontinued. Oh well.

Thought for some reason you guys would like to know.

Braineack 12-23-2009 01:43 PM

i didnt think it ever took off to start?

buffon01 12-23-2009 01:47 PM

I like the hood too... Someone should make a replica, if the market demands of course.

leatherface24 12-23-2009 02:35 PM

Phil has one (levinubhin)

rharris19 12-23-2009 02:38 PM

I have one too, but I am seeling it as it will not fit with the LS1. I thought it was pretty popular.

I have to agree with :brain: They did sell a few of the fiberglass versions, but the carbon version FLOPPED...

hustler 12-23-2009 02:52 PM

I haz one. I should get a copy made since I'm going to hack mine up to fit the 99 motor.

mgeoffriau 12-23-2009 02:55 PM

For sale here if anyone still wants one:

1994 1.8L Miata Engine and Flyin Miata Exctractor Hood

No affiliation.

rharris19 12-23-2009 03:01 PM

IIRC... The vents weren't really placed in an optimal place to extract heat anyways unfortunately.

Apparently the little air foil on the vents works wonders according to levnubbin and keith@FM.

coming...

next year when I get around to it. All parts must sit in the garage for 2-years prior to installing them.

In for string testing!

hustler 12-23-2009 04:52 PM

I'll go home and stuff my nomex/kevlar banana hammock on the wastegate and see if it gets sucked out the vent.

thagr81 us 12-23-2009 04:57 PM

Post results. Haha!

levnubhin 12-23-2009 06:30 PM

What is the string test? I can do it.

I love the hood, it works and I think it looks great. You just have to be careful with water getting into the spark plugs. I would imagine the carbon hood didn't sell well because iirc it was like $700 + shipping. Then after paint it's over $1000, not many people have a need for a 1k plus hood.

Tape some yarn in the vents and see if they get sucked out or not. Please do this and take a pic of it so I don't have to. PLEASE!!!

Oh, I thought you were supposed to age car parts before you put them on to improve fruit structure and relax tannin.

while driving at various speeds.

bellwilliam 12-23-2009 08:32 PM

at higher speed, nothing under 60MPH. at low speed, it doesn't mean a thing.

my vote is that it doesn't work. show me one race car's extractor hood at same location.

Some racecars have extractors further back-ish. But they are significantly different in overall shape such that they don’t really have a high pressure base of wind shield like a Miata shape does.

My guess is the FM hood works just not near as effective as some other hoods that have better placed openings.

I will say my modified Arebuni works at vurtually any speed. Looks like Autokonexion may be a close copy and probably much higher quality than mine might even fit without modification like mine required.

What in the world do you need it for? Don't you have a good motor in the daily?

crazy low crompression, lots and lots of detonation, leaks 1qt every 240-miles...its awesome. PM or email pics of your hood and a price, please.

It looks like I'll never get this car painted.
