Gauge lights out, gauges still work

started the car and turned on the lights and the gauges didn't light up. gauge fuse is good. all gauges still work, blinkers flash on the dash and my air bag, abs, batt, seat belt and check engine light still work when i put the key in.

Switches lights work? (Fan, Hazard etc.) Radio lights?
If they are out then suspect panel light control switch/connector/ground (Ground=#8 under the dash) or pins backed out in joint connector X7.

If it's literally just the cluster illumination then check for pins backed out in the center connector in the back of the cluster (pins 3G red/black and 3H gray/red) or pins backed out in joint connector X21.

It could just be that all your bulbs died I guess.

If your cluster lights are out, check your taillights as well, since they're usually on the same circuit. You don't want to be running around at night w/o taillights.

check to see if your dimmer switch is still plugged in. With that unplugged your dash lights wont work.

Also your dash light and dash power are on different wires also.

Makes sense if you think about it, you're not likely to notice that your taillights are out, but you can't miss having no dash lights. I'd start by checking the taillight wiring & sockets for corrosion/bare wires.

Have you recently messed with your radio or the wiring behind the radio? That'll do it. I bet your "tails" fuse is popped as well.

TNS Relay

These should help.

TNS Relay gets power from Tail Fuse (which you said was good, right?) and powers Dash Illum., License Illum, SAS Control, front parking and side marker. It is tripped by the Light Green wire from the headlight switch.

See if there is 12V at the White/Blue wires at the TNS Relay.

If yes, short either of the White/Blue to the Red/Black at the TNS. If the lights come on then either the TNS or headlight switch is pooched. If they don't come on then the Red/Black wire is cut somewhere.

Remove the short and ground the Light Green wire at the relay and see if the lights come on. If they do then the light switch is not feeding a ground signal to the relay. If they don't, the TNS is pooched.

Would that stop the beeping when the lights are on and the car is off or door open with keys in. Notice that last night.

BarbyCar 10-19-2010 04:35 PM

That's a really good question.

AFAIK the door chime is controlled by the ECU and takes inputs from the door switch and key reminder switch. The only connection I can see between the TNS Relay and the ECU is via the SAS control module.

It does not explain why there's no chimes with key in and door(s) open.

Anyone else have a better idea?

jeff_man 10-20-2010 06:23 PM

cel light and air bag light also are no longer on, air bag use to flash and i have codes.

BarbyCar 10-21-2010 12:01 PM

Dash Illumination
Tail Lights
Door Chime
CEL & Airbag lights (First post said it worked - changed or mis-info?)
Radio Lights

CEL gets driven off the ECU - Are you running the stock ECU?
Airbag light comes off the SAS module so it could still be related to TNS. It's also on the same connector as TNS feed to the SAS.

Did you check that TNS Relay yet?

Tekel 10-21-2010 01:00 PM

One my my lights was out this morning... gave the dash a good smack from the underside and it came back on. Guess I should get in there and find that lose wire.

I realize that this hasn't had a post in months, but after over an hour of searching both the forum and google, this is the only thread I found that might be helpful. I also found one on another site, but I can't post there.

My issue is nearly the same as this one. The difference is, I have a 1994 Miata. That makes the instructions for shorting out the TNS (still not sure what that stands for) relay irrelevant. I have little to no knowledge of how to even begin reading wiring diagrams, so any help I can get a would really appreciate!

The problem:

I was driving home from a 500 miles trip out of state and realized my gauge cluster lights and tail lights were no longer working. I do have some experience with cars, so I pulled over and started checking around. No fuses are blown (I've checked 4 different times) and the connections to the back of the gauge cluster are all good. No corrosion and all plugged in tightly (managed to further break my gauge hood while I was at it). I have located the TNS relay on the driver's side of the car under the hood. I have two that are exactly the same and one that is larger (it controls the headlight motors from what I could tell). The identical ones control the horn and the lights that I'm having issues with. I switched them to see if the horn relay (which is working just fine as a horn relay) would fix my lighting issue, and of course it didn't.

I know it cannot just be as simple as every bulb going out at the same time. I also haven't messed with anything electrical recently. The radio is still OEM. The HVAC lights do not work, gauge cluster lights do not work, and the tail lights do not work. Brake lights and headlight (hi and low beam) still all work along with the seat belt warning light ect. It is my understanding that the tail lights, HVAC, and gauge cluster lights are all on the same circuit. The only other option I could think of is the headlight switch is possibly bad. However, I cannot find a single post or thread about issues with the headlight switch.

I have taken a volt meter to every wire in that circuit I can find and wrote down the readings, but I do not know how to diagnose anything from it.

I am desperate. I deliver pizza for a living and this is my only car right now because my regular delivery car is in the shop. My loving brother decided to back it into a truck for me. Therefore, I cannot go to work until this gets fixed or my other car is out of the shop. Any advice/help anyone can give me would be amazing! If for some reason there is already a thread about this same issue on this same car and I missed it, I apologize in advance. Thanks again!

Here I am again. Still sad to see no reply or help with this issue. Still doing plenty of google and forum searches to find a solution. Here is the update: I managed to get a working used headlight/turn signal switch and replaced the entire unit. I also bought and installed a brand new tns relay. The problem was fixed for a while 6ish hours and then the dash and tail lights went out again. I am no good with wiring diagrams. So at this point I am completely lost. I have tried everything I can think of. I already rechecked the fuses and switched the relay out again and the lights still won't come on. Please oh please someone help rescue me from this horrible electrical nightmare!

I have the same problem.. don't know what to do....
