Going to try a Foamectomy... Hog clip/tool question

What size hog clips and tool should I use to refasten the cushion?

Thanks,
Marcello

pdexta 04-19-2016 07:20 PM

I've done it several times and always use zip ties. Seems like it'd be a real PITA to reattach the hog clips and zip ties were cheap, easy, fast, secure.

+1. Zip ties.

thumpetto007 04-19-2016 07:34 PM

I'm fine with using zipties, lol

Thanks everyone

I'll do the passenger side first, in case I mess up.

18psi 04-19-2016 08:16 PM

I had to use zip ties too, what a pain in the butt. I will never, as long as I live, do it again.

thumpetto007 04-19-2016 10:58 PM

Did it make the seat less comfortable for you? we are exactly the same weight, so this would help me...

18psi 04-19-2016 11:00 PM

it was just a pain in the butt to do, and the results were ...... mediocre

and the seat looks like poo afterwards. like it collapsed

thumpetto007 04-20-2016 03:15 AM

Damn. I'll have to go seat shopping. I am too tall with my helmet on and the roll bar.

x_25 04-20-2016 09:14 AM

I just recently did mine. Zip ties work fine.

For comfort, I need to sculpt the back a bit, but the seat base is comfy for me with just the foam cut from the top. I had cut the bottom lump off as well and that was too much for daily driving, but it will come out for my track day, since that and a bit of lean can get me below the roll bar.

You can drop 1/2" or a bit more by ditching the rear seat mounts and making your own that mount lower

18psi 04-20-2016 09:18 AM

its worth a try if you're bored and if you'll be tossing the seat anyway, just be prepared for it to take a long time lol

+1 to zip ties. I didn't find it too hard tbh, finished in under 2 beers. I found the seat way more comfortable afterwards. I was making weekly routine 10+ hour trips for a few months with it, have yet to find a more comfortable driver's seat in a car.

I'm currently in the process of recovering a set of seats. Zip ties work great. I just cut the old hog clips off with wire cutters.

How much do you weigh? What is your general body size? Like height and waist size, thanks

18psi 04-20-2016 06:21 PM

penis size too

thumpetto007 04-20-2016 06:31 PM

^that and ball size. I need to make sure I don't squeeze my family jewels between my Italian thighs.

dasting 04-20-2016 06:31 PM

a/s/l?

Success of foamectomie comfort will depend on body. I'm 6'1, 145lbs, 28" waist, 42" chest. Dated much shorter girls with same length legs as me. Buying clothes is a bitch.

Do we sex now?

edit: not quite as big as savington's

thumpetto007 04-20-2016 06:39 PM

Hm, ok, I'm 50 pounds heavier, I'll have to think about it, or just try on the pass seat first.

But yeah, I'll save a room here for you.

6'4" tall, 35" inseam, 33" waist and have foamectomy'd the crap out of my stock seat to get me under the hardtop. Still several inches away from passing broomstick.

+1 for Zip ties. Took a hacksaw blade to sculpt foam and had mine start-to-finish out, cut, and back in car in under two beers.

^how much do you weigh, how long do you sit in your car, and do you still find it comfortable?

my torso is shorter than average, so a foamectomy would get me to a good height, but I have a bad back, and this is my daily that I drive many many hours in, so I don't really want to sacrifice comfort... at the same time, I wanna go fast on the track... so I need to do something.

I'm fat. 185-190lbs. Foamectomy improved seat comfort for me as I could tailor where the amount of lumbar as well a side bolstering. I trimmed the living shit out of the base, and a bit out of the back. Feels good, but want a new seat to bolt to floor. My knees are still up against the dash, and my 320mm wheel still interferes with heel-toe actions.

I drive the shit out of my car. for long periods of time. Like kill a whole tank in one day type of frequent driving. Comfortable to me. :likecat:

Thank you, this all helps.

+1 to hack saw blade. I used a large, serrated bread knife, which also worked well.

The reason it is more comfortable for me is because it's form fitting. There's no pressure points - equal hold on my upper thighs, hips, ass, and lower back. It's like a cradle. I left the front of the foam untouched, effectively giving me a solid angled layback. YMMV.

Amazingly, I still have pictures.

Wow, that's a really thick cushion, and there is still foam left where your butt goes?

Thanks so much for finding and posting that.

The top photo is the final product that went back in the car. If I recall, the foam was very thin at the ass point - I'd guess around 1/2".

I sold the car to my buddy. He just sent me a couple pics. Here's the seat, roughly 75k miles later. I still drive it from time to time. Love that seat.

(edit - obligatory I've been trying to get him to put the stock wheel back in since the HPDE safety thread, but he keeps saying he's going to put full harnesses and seat in soon. He actually finally bought a real seat, and the car is only track duty now.)

wackbards 04-22-2016 07:01 PM

I did a foamectomy. Here are my observations:
1) go to goodwill and buy the longest bread knife with the smallest teeth you can find. SAW the foam off with this knife
2) just cut off the lower bulge so the bottom of the foam is one flat plane
3) don't separate the shell from the foam where your ass goes. The bolster seams are integrated into the foam, and will always be janky and loose if you separate them from the foam
4) the back insert comes free separately. Add foam or shave foam to lower the lumbar support curve down the equivalent amount that you cut out of the bottom of the seat pan
5) as everyone else mentioned, use zip ties instead of hog rings to put it back together

You're gonna get a couple inches max from doing this.

dasting 04-23-2016 09:15 AM

Making a trip for a foamectomie-purpose knife is super overkill. There's something in the house that works just fine. There's no one size fits all for cutting the bottom bulge of foam. Cut/tailor to fit.

x_25 04-23-2016 12:00 PM

Electric carving knife is the tits for cutting foam, btw.
