I can get a new 1.6 head still in plastic for $150. Is it worth it to have a spare, or not really?

are you wanting to build a head and put better valves and springs in it? If so, then it may be worth it if you want no downtime. As for just having an extra head, there really isn't a need for it.

I'll pass then. Chances are that if I'm doing head work I'll also be doing the bottom end of the motor as well

I payed that much for my whole motor (running from a '92) and am getting a full '90 replacement for $75 to put my other '92 crank in.

I like having back up parts, but save the money for M-Tuned rods.

If it is indeed brand new it would be worth it in my opinion.

No need to worry about cam journals that are shot or a warped head. Or even a head that has been resurfaced excessively.

If it's just the head with no valvetrain, it's no deal.
If it's a brand new "complete" head with new cams/valves/springs/etc installed... then it's a helluva deal.

fwiw: I just paid $200 for a big nose long block, and there's a 1.6 on CL Atl for 225 now.

why did it need to be resurfaced if it was new?

If it was resurfaced then it's a rebuilt head. If that is the case then I would not spend $150 bucks on it.
