specifically how far do you need to get the hose into the red fitting

Get a big chisel, heavy hammer and a chunk of aluminum or steel. The chisel leaves a clean cut and make assembly easy. Lay the hose on your chunk of metal and give the chisel a couple hard wacks.

It really is that easy. I do quite a bit with braided hose at work.

i managed to get the hose in the end but the blue fitting i couldn't get started into the hose so i pulled it back out and now it's all fucked up

Are you taping the hose while you make your cut? That's the only way I could get an end that would feed in without fraying.

There are probably about $80 in fittings in the woods around my old house. I understand your frustration.

What brand of stuff are you using. I recently switched from Earls to Goodridge and assembly is much easier.

I know what you mean,whenever I do SS braided hoses & ends I don't want anyone to talk to me or near me.

I find the Earl's fittings are the hardest ones to assemble and try to avoid using them if I can.I use the Aeroquip hose & fittings.

I used the summit branded fittings and didn't have any trouble. One fitting didn't want to work right, so i pulled it off, retrimmed the hose, and put it back together. After that it worked fine. The trick is to use LOTS of motor oil during assembly.

i guy at work got one end on for me. he used masking tape and used this tiny hacksaw which made a really nice cut. poured a ton of motor oil into the fitting and put the hose in without removing the tape, worked better than what i did.
