I'm in the middle of making a custom dash with Autometer gauges. Tach, oil/water temp, oil press and the stock fuel gauge.

I want to impliment the ODO and trip meter somehow. Has anyone succesfully removed the ODO portion of the cluster and had it still work? Even if I can't display I that's OK. I just want to keep the ODO running in the background even if it's hidden under the dash. That way I can at least keep track of KMS incase I ever sell the car.

Also, if anyone knows of any digital LED style speedos that would be able to be grafted into thes kind of cluster.

I looked at doing this as well, took apart a spare cluster to experiment on etc. The only way I can see to do it is to hook up the speedo somewhere out of the way. It is all driven by the cable and interlocked together. The solution I had planned to do was document/photograph the original mileage and then use a digital speedo with a built in odo that just starts at 0 miles. Just add the two for the actual mileage. But that also requires using a digital sender, I plan to try to convert to an MSM sender (digital 4.10 sender). Another side note I found: if you remove the front glass and trim ring off of autometer 52 mm gauges, they fit perfectly into the smaller holes in the factory bezel.

Autometer makes a few with built in odometer. They basically have a selectable pulse per revolution setting for your sending unit. I wasn't able to find out how many PPR the Miata sending unit is. I even asked a tech friend of mine who called a Mazda engineer and they didn't even know... so it will be a matter of figuring it out and seeing what works. I haven't had the cash to get my hands on one either to just measure it. The other option is to just use the factory MSM or other NB speedo gauge.
