ya im raping it for brakes and diff

by the way, i freakin love that quote racer!

dc2696 02-04-2007 06:57 PM

so 1.6 brakes and rearend on ur 97 and 1.8 stuff on ur 90..

akaryrye 02-06-2007 09:46 PM

goddamnit, i want to fucking kill the designer at mazda who decided to ditch the stubshafts for 96 and 97 models :vash:

miatamania 02-06-2007 10:07 PM

wait...I thought it was a direct swap to the 90 if you used the half shafts and driveshaft, and complete rearend from a 1.8?

akaryrye 02-06-2007 10:50 PM

ya it is, just the axle design is a bit different, if you look at the pictures of my 90' open diff, you will see four bolts where it connects to the diff, thats the stubshaft. without being able to just unbolt it like that, you have to wiggle things around a bit more and in my case i just decided to completely remove the hub (after exhausting all other means) and swap the entire assembly because then i get the correct heatshields anyway.

edit ... im not actually done as of now, im just on a break and forsee another hour or so of work left. Then im gonna get me some beers

Braineack 02-06-2007 10:55 PM

I heard they are a bitch...that's why I opted for the 94-95 style...luckily i was able to find them.

miatamania 02-06-2007 11:01 PM

so...? 94-95 style axles are preferred...and those go w/ any 94-97 torsen?

Braineack 02-06-2007 11:37 PM

the 94-95 style use splined stub shafts that insert into the carrier, then the axles bolt to them. the 96+ style are splined on both ends and get inserted directly into both the carrier and hub.

94 - 95 :

96+:

miatamania 02-06-2007 11:54 PM

ah...so I have to match the carrier to the axles

akaryrye 02-06-2007 11:59 PM

nah im pretty sure you could use either axle, just the ability to split it in half makes it easier to work with. The stub half of the axle is not shown and would merely complete the 1 part axle. The only advantage i can see is it would possibly be stronger? and would save like a pound or 2.

Ok im pretty much done swapping the 90 into my 97, along with hubs, brakes, wheel bearings and whatnot. All i have to do now is tighten all the bolts and hang the exhaust and i can enjoy my now open differentiall'd 97 with 4.3 gear ratio.

edit ... took out something i didnt want to say

akaryrye 04-29-2007 03:20 AM
