Hello All,
While stuck at home, thinking about projects for the car. FM2, Trackspec built engine, running 15 psi. I have a crossbow radiator, FM fans and coolant reroute. Car does not overheat, but in the summer here in Florida, with A/C on the fans get a workout. I’ve been considering hood louvers and am aware of the Singular kit. Before I go all “me too” and use that kit, I was wondering if anyone had some other recommendations for a good alternative. LOTS of louvers available but without seeing them firsthand, it’s hard to know what might work well.
Surely, some of you have been down this road and have some ideas. I’d like to hear your views.

My view is that the Singular kit was designed around Miatas, and as a Miata owner i should probably get the kit for a Miata.

 

That sounds like complete nonsense. Why would I use a miata based kit on a miata.

 

I've installed both the the Singular kit and the Trackspec kit. I personally prefer the trackspec kit, just because it was easier to install (the rivets it comes with are terrible however). I do not have a side by side performance comparison unfortunately

I may wind up with the Singular kit, but sometimes I like to do things a little differently. Like, I’m using a Hydra....

I'm in a very similar boat to you. Still have A/C, street/autox use, and working towards turning up the wick. Already on the edge of my comfort level for temp management.

I'd prefer to go as far as having a second hood either modified for the Singular kit, or knowing more about if a functional fiberglass/carbon fiber vented hood that already exists. Not aware of one.

 

Treasure Coast Miata has a vented fiberglass hood, but based upon reading here I think the vent is a little far back from the front edge to be optimal. Not to say it's not functional, just could be better. Link

Well that bums me out, as one of their lexan hardtop windows was going to be one of my next purchases for my car.

 

Treasure coast fiberglass is made by CCP fabrication. Only ever heard good things about CCP

 

1+ For CCP, bought my top from them and quality is top notch for a race car product.

 

It's fine. If you notice, it's got slight ramp before the opening which means that it's creating its own vacuum to pull out engine air that's not dependent on where it is on the hood. Air is definitely deflected from the front bumper, but it also hits the front of the hood (on a normal hood) and bounces up, creating a vacuum. If you get too close to the front of the hood, you get in the "bump zone." My term.

 

I didn't see the Treasure coast hood before I cut mine up to install the NC louvers on the NB hood. Went the NC vents just because of the lines and it was a bit different.

Both the Trackspec louvers that I ran on a Corvette hood and the Singular kits do what they are advertised to do. The faster you move the better they work.

If a carbon World Challenge C6 Vette style hood was available for the NB I would run it, as it would be more efficient than the aluminum vents.

That said, vents do really help evacuate air from the engine compartment helping out all components.

About !/2 the flow I was talking about. Add on vents are a better option than that design.

 

I have a set of the Singular vents that I bought and never used. If you’re interested in them shoot me a PM.

 

I wound up buying the Treasure Island Miata vented hood. I was going to buy a hood anyway to put the vents in. I can pick it up at the manufacturer and save the shipping cost. Maybe not as effective as the Singular louvers, but it has to be better than stock. It should be built in about 3 weeks and then maybe another 3 before I fine tune the fit and paint it. I’ll post up once it’s on.
