How much did you pay for your miata?

After an experience with a shady seller (repainted the car himself, looked as if it had been wrecked as well, none of which was revealed to me until after I drove 3 hours to get a final look and buy it) I'm left without a car and on the hunt for a miata. I may be wrong but it seems to me that people are pretty proud of them. I've seen a bone stock 91 for 7k!

My price range is $3500 and under. Ideally I'd like to find an NA for 2k to 2.5k so I can afford a roll bar and a quick release for my steering wheel (momo from my subaru).

What did you guys pay for your miatas? Where'd you find them?

bojanglincraig 04-20-2010 02:08 PM

craigslist, payed 3500....1990, came with fresh paint and all stock except for sparco seats, bilstein/gc's, 15x8 axis old skools, hard dog roll bar, and an alpine head unit. Had about 180K

Sparetire 04-20-2010 02:09 PM

Cool thread, it would be better if it were a poll.

I dont have a Miata yet ( insert derogatory smiley here, I deserve it) but right now with the weather improving they very seldom go below about 3K. If you want a 1.8 car they tend to be 5K and up right now.

I find that prices are very local too. If I look at Santa Fe and Albequerque (about 8 hours south of me and a pretty easy drive) the same car is often about 2K cheaper. Finding an NB for under 7K is very hard around here.

miataspeed2005 04-20-2010 02:12 PM

$2800 for a red 1990 with 70k miles excelent body and interior, jackson racing intake and exhaust, back in 2004.

Splitime 04-20-2010 02:15 PM

1500 for a 93 with 90k and a hardtop.

It was beaten and ugly.... but mechanically find beyond the 2 easy to fix CELs.

mgeoffriau 04-20-2010 02:15 PM

I paid $3900 for a 1992 with good, recent paint and a hardtop (but a torn up soft top). No modifications other than a terrible Tokico HP suspension (though the seller did include the original suspension as well). 94k miles when I bought it.

Jeff_Ciesielski 04-20-2010 02:19 PM

$3000 for a 92 sunburst with a matching hardtop w 118k that was owned by a Mazda technician. Unfortunately his son was the primary driver so it came with a nasty dent in the passenger side and lots of empty plastic baggies under the seats. I also found some curious glass artwork in the trunk that smelled like a skunk :dunno:

hustler 04-20-2010 02:25 PM

$1600 for a 1991 brg with 131k miles and a hardtop with ugly ass paint and a cracked soft-top window.

$1300 for a beat 1995 that's a few different colors...but it has a torsen!!!

I'd like to find another BRG to daily.

curly 04-20-2010 02:37 PM

$6000 for a 1993 in '02 I think, with a hardtop that had a plastic window already, VLSD, no other options beyond PS. It was in mint condition, 60k I think. Three or four years later and 40kish I bought it from my dad for $3000. Hard top is now a flat blue with chipping around the edges, I think the idiot that used roofing tar to seal the lexan window tried repainting it as well after it blew off. Latches are there for a reason, go figure.

I'm not sure where my dad found it originally, I believe the newspaper.

budget racer 04-20-2010 03:02 PM

$800 for a running/driving '92 POS w/ 170k on the clock

thesnowboarder 04-20-2010 03:03 PM

2k w/ 90k on the clock. Silverstone stock 90 not a single flaw in it till i bought it.

I have been toying with the idea of taking my car to the previous owner now and seeing what kind of reaction i can get out of them.

buffon01 04-20-2010 03:14 PM

$800, red, 170k broken side mirror, dents and scratches, and interior defects. However it had a very good top, and it was mechanically sound. This one passed away on a horrible acctident 11/15/09

$1070, white, 140k, top look like it had been in a gang shooting, flaki paint on the hood, lots of rice lightning shit, very good interior, and yes motherfuckers it has a torsen diff. :fawk:

curly 04-20-2010 03:22 PM

Only $4500 for a beautiful, slow, completely stock 1990!
http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/ctd/1698533547.html

See, good deals DO exist!

I can probably help you find one.. I spend a lot of time on craigslist. The only thing that limits you particularly is that you are in Montana. Establish how far you are willing to travel for a "steal".

ArtieParty 04-20-2010 03:32 PM

$3900 for my 95 R package in awesome condition

$500 for my 96 R package in horrible condition. Needed lots of work done to it, but looks awesome now. I might be selling this one.

ArtieParty 04-20-2010 03:35 PM

Here's a built motor + turbo for $6000. I see this as a steal.

revlimiter 04-20-2010 03:43 PM

$6000ish for my 95 with 31k miles. This was winter of 2009. The price was worth it to me.

miatamike 04-20-2010 03:44 PM

$14,000 3 years ago. I couldn't build this car for twice the money I paid.

No, but you could have had Robino's car instead. :fawk:

FRT_Fun 04-20-2010 03:56 PM

~4500 I think... bought this time last year. 80k on the clock, came with hardtop, ran great and boosted a week after I bought it.

Stein 04-20-2010 04:21 PM

All eight were CL. Ranged from $7250 for 51K 99 two years ago to $400 for a 27K mile 94 "project" that was solely purchased to part out.

Savington 04-20-2010 04:29 PM

$4200 almost 4 years ago. 123k on the odometer, absolutely bone stock.

oops.

sixshooter 04-20-2010 04:36 PM

'96 Montego/tan leather, 112k miles, clearcoat peeling, tires fair/poor, $3200

Alas that car was totalled. I had to buy a rolling shell and transport every part to another car. The car is now silver. (Used to be BootedNB's car)

shuiend 04-20-2010 04:44 PM

$4750 for my 94 with 52k on it back in 2005. $1300 for my 92B&T with 300k on it with hardtop and bbs rims back in October.

Pen2_the_penguin 04-20-2010 05:05 PM

$0.00

gift.

frostyllama 04-20-2010 05:16 PM

2000$ for 90 miata with 250k on odometer & 1.6 ln engine swap unkown miles good compression, hardtop, a few dings and some fading paint. apparently like "20 people" called and the reason i got it was because i called like 3 times.

edit: bought nov last year

94mx5red 04-20-2010 07:11 PM

About $4000 near 4 years ago with 112k, bone stock.

PO was a neighbor in my apartment building that was moving back to Germany.

cueball1 04-20-2010 07:47 PM

Paid $3500 for a 75K mile stock 94 with a hardtop three years ago but I took my time and looked and shopped for the right deal on the right car.

Searchtempest is your friend for searching Craigslist. Here is a search I did within 500 miles of Billings for Miatas for sale. Maybe you'll see something to check out. I saw several 99's under 100K miles for around 4k on that list.

http://www.searchtempest.com/results...in&maxAsk8=max

NA6C-Guy 04-20-2010 07:50 PM

Too much. $4500 for a classic red '94 R Package with ~101k miles, shitty paint and of course tons of rattles.

codrus 04-20-2010 07:54 PM

Heh. I paid $25K for mine, brand new with 15 miles on it, in July of 1998. :)

--Ian

astroboy 04-20-2010 08:05 PM

I paid $2000 for my 90 that was shot in 03 and I picked up a 92 for free off a coastie who had abandon it. Parted out the 92 and rebuilt the 90.

miszcris 04-20-2010 08:20 PM

paid $2,000 for 91 auto white miata with 113k miles on it. :) she's the love of my life now, kind of wish i had bought a stick. but appearently people say automatics are pretty hard to find :D

wittyworks 04-20-2010 08:25 PM

3000 for a 95 bone stock in decent/good condition with 116K

paNX2K&SE-R 04-20-2010 08:31 PM

$1500 for my '94 on craigslist in June 2008. Its a california car, the drivers fender and door were dented, and it needed some minor mechanical work like a radiator and brakes.

adamhershner 04-20-2010 08:45 PM

$4500 for a '97 w/ 39k (interior needed some work, still needs a few paint touchups...;)

Cspence 04-20-2010 09:02 PM

6k, pretty much as it sits mechanically, just over a year ago
https://www.miataturbo.net/cars-sale-trade-6/considering-selling-my-miata-24080/

thirdgen 04-20-2010 09:16 PM

March of 07 I paid $6000 cash for my 99 with 103,000 miles from a dealer. Was 1 owner car and bone stock except for the 16" motegi wheels. I have since added everything...roll bar, hardtop, turbo and everything turbo related, gauges, MS, LC-1, exhaust, removed A/C. I'd guess I have at least $4000 on top of what I paid for it, I never figured it out. I do know that I am more than happy with it, it's at least 3 seconds faster in the 1/4 than stock, and I get better gas mileage.

Double O 86 04-20-2010 10:47 PM

In November, 1999, I financed my '99 PEP with hardtop and dealer-added leather seats for four years. Probably paid just under $30,000 all told.

inferno94 04-20-2010 11:00 PM

'97 with nb ht and defroster glass window soft top, 135k km (~84k mi) in red, safetied and emissions tested, taxes in $4500 in Dec 08. Asking was $8000 (down from 10k two months before) at a used merc/bmw dealer, it was traded on a z4.

The owner of the dealership wasn't selling much and I overheard that he was going to miss a mortgage payment so I got my car for my price.

Keep in mind everything is 1000000000X more money in Canada and 1.8 na's are somewhat rare here.

turotufas 04-20-2010 11:16 PM

I got mines from Mazda mechanics, they were planning to build like a SM. Buuut the dealership closed down. I came through with the cash after a RB25 beauty broke my heart. $2500 with a spare NB motor, radiator, and junk. Both parties was friends of my dad actually.

TurboTim 04-20-2010 11:30 PM

$5400?? '92 with 93xxx?? miles, back in '01. Mint interior, decent exterior, Jackson Racing Header. Ended up having rust in the back fenders that popped thru the first winter which is still there. The plastic rear window lasted 2 winters.

Man it's been a long time.

rider384 04-20-2010 11:40 PM

$4,500 for a bone stock '96 with 75k miles.

NA6C-Guy 04-21-2010 12:02 AM

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to spend too much (my opinion anything over $4k for a pre '99 model is too much, no matter the condition or mileage, I didn't know better back then). If I could do it over again, I would have spent the extra $ I had on a newer car (I think it was an '01 I had lined up, with decently low miles), instead of an older car and mods. :violin:

chicksdigmiatas 04-21-2010 12:13 AM

I worked at a shop, it had a blown HG with 105k miles. Dude offered it up for 1000 bucks. Been driving it for 7 years..

lordrigamus 04-21-2010 12:22 AM

I got my '92 for $650. 90k on the odometer. It needed a timing belt and rear window. It wasn't in bad shape except for a dent in the rear fender and flaking paint

It's starting to show its age...like me!:giggle:

grego9198 04-21-2010 12:52 AM

Paid 9k (cdn) for my '99 in 2008. Bought it off my brother in law's best friend who never drove it in the winter. It had 68,xxx kms on it. Came with the hard top and a set of brand new winter tires, everything was stock. Miatas fetch a pretty good premium here in Ontario. Haven't seen too many under 5k regardless of age and mileage.

Turbo_4 04-21-2010 01:01 AM

$5100 for a 97 with 87k from an older lady. It was originally bought from Jeff Haas Mazda in Houston(which was right down the street from where I grew up) and still had the window sticker, license plate frame, and cards from that dealer...pretty cool.

BoostedR 04-21-2010 01:10 AM

Traded my $1500 integra type R for a 2000 miata with roll bar, door bar, tein suspension, carbon fiber hood, and work emotion wheels. Only reason the guy wanted my car was because it had working A/C.

pdexta 04-21-2010 01:48 AM

$1800 for my '90 with 165k in 2007. The car was bone stock aside from the gay blue (apparently mazda calls it "crystal blue" :giggle:) paint.

$5200 for my '99 with 105k in 2008. Stock w/ a clogged cat.

Doppelgänger 04-21-2010 08:20 AM

Ummm yeah.

$14k

But this was for a 2002SE with 32k miles in Jan of 08.....so 6 year old car with 32k. Paid exactly KBB value.....but got Ohlins suspension, FMII turbo kit, BF rollbar, harnesses, sway bars, PWR radiator w/slim fans, FM clutch and flywheel, FM exhaust, MSM spoiler and a boat load of spares including a set of new 6ULs with new Toyo RA-1s, a spare front lip, all the stock suspension, a set of prestince OEM 15" wheels with brand new tires, and every other stock part that had been upgraded were all in boxes.... all in all...there was at least an extra $20,000 in "stuff" on the car. It was a steal for $14k.....and I've always wanted an 02SE.

I have since gone though everything....new exhaust, added chassis bracing, tuned suspension, replaced turbo manifold, Bomex mirrors, Brembo brakes, SSR wheels, MSM headlights, GV bumper, side skirts, MSM mirror, 10AE seats, swapped door panels, swapped gauge faces, coolant reroute, dyno tuning, among other things......

02semiata 04-21-2010 08:31 AM

Yay for me overpaying :loser:. I paid 12k for a 1 owner stock 02SE. I guess that is what happens when you buy from a dealer lol. At least I got a hard top and the car was like new.

TurboTim 04-21-2010 08:38 AM

Damn, killer deal!

$5500 for my classic red '94 a-pkg in 2004 with 60k miles from a dealership (before i knew better)

$3500 for my black '99 in 2009 with 120k miles and black hardtop (some of the panels have been repainted, 7/10 aesthetically, 9.5/10 mechanically) - craigslist

1200 for a white '90 just yesterday with 140k miles, fresh repaint, and white hardtop, blown 5-speed (i just happen to have a 5-spd sitting around from a recent 6-spd swap :D) 4/10 aesthetically, 3/10 mechanically, 9/10 hard top. - craigslist

Not really all that bad for the condition , the fact that you got a hard top./..and that you got it from a dealership. That last point added a couple thousand dollars though.

m2cupcar 04-21-2010 10:09 AM

$240- 90, blown engine, hardtop, harddog dd, bad fuel pump, no AC, no softtop (frame/top), incomplete body work RR and previously wrecked RF with mediocre repair- needed complete paint.

Sean 04-21-2010 10:13 AM

92' 63K bought 6 years ago for $3200 in mint condition all the way around. New top, new paint and the longest repair log history I have ever seen. I saw it at my dads work and asked the guy if he would sell it and he did. Sold my suburban for it. Best thing I ever did.

nuroski 04-21-2010 10:29 AM

i paid 6k for my 99 with 90k on the ol ticker, soft top was shot and had two CELs but othere than that it was a little high for me and the dealer over priced it but i needed a car and took it, this was in the summer so you know how that goes. pissed me off they took the stock Bose head unit out for a damn Jensen cd player, i asked them why and i guess it went to another car of the owners bastard

Bond 04-21-2010 11:22 AM

4k for my 1990 back in 1996. Bone stock, Base model.

IcantDo55 04-21-2010 11:25 AM

Criags

1992 138K
