Anyone know what the fuck this thing is?
It connects to the transmission housing tail. The other end connects to the speedometer cable. The writing says, " 8 pulses per revolution"
So far I've gotten possible sensor for cruise control which I removed quite awhile ago. Of course the car is a 92 manual trans.
Anyone seen one and knows what it is?

Rev. C

[Shit - I thought eveyone had one of these things connected to their trannies]

It's a speedometer sender, as would be used with an aftermarket speedo gauge. I've installed a lot of those before. So technically, if your MS has speed input, you should be able to make this communicate with it.
I was about to say it may be an early AutoMeter sender, but as far as I know, they've always used 16 pulse-per-rev. senders.

No such thing has ever been on this car.
It has to be something to do with an aftermarket cruise control system that was on it before I went to FI

RotorNutFD3S 07-10-2008 03:37 PM

That's probably it, as they require speed input. That would mean that the CC unit that was on the car was most likely aftermarket and not OEM.

I'd agree. This wasn't on your car from the factory.

You might get lucky if you pull your clocks out. On the back there is a screw labeled RSW this is a VSS signal. It is connected to a reed switch in the back of the speedo guage which is activated by the rotating magnet in the speedo. My car didn't have cruise control from factory but I still have the VSS pickup. Hope this helps with the traction control, I would love to see it in action.

I found this info whilst getting a Mercedes COMAND satnav/media centre to work in my MX-5 a la Frank Devocht.

Pics? COMMAND FTMFW :bigtu:

PS--there's plenty of ways of getting speed signal to a NAV system (or trac control), including VSS at the back of the cluster. I'm just too tired/lazy/apathetic to detail now.

I sold my unit after someone offered me silly money for it and the CANBUS emulator that I used to make it work in my VERY NON CAN miata. I never took any pics of my install but here are some pics that Frank took of his.

If anyone wants to do this I will provide a full writeup/howto including part numbers and how to make CAN work in exchange for some old T25 water hardlines. :D

m2cupcar 07-11-2008 09:28 AM

Somebody find this man some lines so he will build a faq/howto for this.... it's badass :bigtu:

that's a LHD mx5 in the uk?

Duckie_uk 07-11-2008 10:45 AM

That one isn't mine. It belongs to a fellow called Frank Devocht. I may do the write-up anyway on the understanding that someone in the future may have some hardlines and send them my way rather than bin them.
