its always something....
So i just started my car for the 1st time in 3months...i know i know i shoulda periodically started it. I'm prepared for flaming.
But back to the issue. The car started right up the 1st try and immediately it didn't sound right, but brushed it off as it was working out the gunk etc....Idle was very rich at 10.x-11.3ish i let it idle for about 15 min, no major change idle got a little leaner 11.x-12.2ish, went to the gas station, put some fuel injector cleaner in it, and a full tank of 93. drove it for about 15min and still no change. decided to try some boost and see how it is...well that was no good, instant hesitation and stuttering. and i noticed oil pressure dropped a little bit. SO i went to a jiffy lube and got an oil change. oil pressure back to normal, but still stuttering and having hesitation...still running super rich. I decide to go to pepboys and get some new spark plugs, get home gap them to .034, put em in, and of course 0 change. still having same problems. and then i noticed my gas gauge, I used almost a 1/4 tank of gas going a total of maybe 15miles No black smoke, no puddles of gas, no visible leaks, my vacuum lines look fine and all are tight and secure I've narrowed it down to Injectors stuck open? and got an idea from a friend that the FPR might be stuck closed? both would cause fuel dumping in to the engine. any other ideas? |
Bad gasoline... 2 months is enough time for gas to go stale, not combust properly etc...
If you have a low tank of fuel, Top it off with fresh stuff, perhaps a little CAM 2 for octane boost... if lots of gas, pump it out. Smell the fuel. bad gas has a distinctly different smell. I try and leave no gas in anything that is parked for extended periods. lawnmowers, Weedeaters, Blowers, saws, Even my Mini.. Hagerty Magazine even just had an article talking about how gasoline goes flat quickly now. Just a thought Goodluck |
would that stay-bil stuff work in a car? i know it does wonders in my generators and boat engines.

Try reloading your MS maps(if you saved them)
|
yea, gotta get them from paul, don't even have my tune on my new laptop, thanks OG didn't even think of that....how's your house btw? wayne got hit really bad in the nor'easter we had
|
Everyone else is riding around in boats. We are high and dry, but my boat sunk in my pond. Go figure
|
so, its not injectors, its not FPR. its the Coils, cyl 2 & 4 aren't firing, taking off COP's and putting stock ignition on to see if it fixes it.
|
edit: nevermind
|
lol what were you gonna say?
|
i was going to say "stuck injector". i'm suprised it ran at all if you were only getting spark on 2 cylinders.
|
yea it didn't run well at all, im surprised it drove to the store and back
|
So you went out and boosted your ill-sounding miata and then took it somewhere for an oil change? Hmmmm.......

didn't really boost. and thought maybe it needed to just open up and get whatever gunk was there out.
Anyway, its not the COPs, same problem with stock ignition, looking into injectors more. I disconnected injector number 2 from the harness and there was no change. When the same thing was done to the other cylinders car would run even worse. Grabbed another injector harness and gonna swap it out and see what happens. |
Did the car feel really rough all the time or did it smooth out sometimes?
If its an intermittent thing maybe it has something to do with condensation from sitting? |
You blew the welds on your intake manifolds paul walker. Seriously, if you unhooked your injector and nothing changed....... that could be it.

did you try different plug wires?
|
tried COP's(coil on plug setup) and a stock coilpack and racingbeat wires. pretty sure its the injector and/or the injector harness

Time for a compression and leak down test.

Acorns in the timing belt? Oh wait, wrong Mob member :giggle:
How full was your tank when it was parked? The more air in the tank, the quicker it goes bad. |

it actually did smooth out occasionally, which is what threw me off.
If its not that, then I am trying to think of things that can happen while sitting to cause this, and condensation on an electrical part is one of them. If you have a intermittent short or something from say a wire going through the firewall with minimal insualation that has some condensation on it then it could mess with anything. But honestly thats a long shot. |
There is a drain bolt on the miata tank...and winter gas is also different from summer gas. I dont know if you put winter gas in it, but if you did and its warm out now it could cause that problem. Why dont you just pull the fuel rail and prime the key and see where fuel is coming out.

all great idea, I'm getting 2 other injectors on sunday and put them in. 2 for safe measure lol
Its easy enough to unclip the injector from the harness. Gas is from last week or so. I got a tank of 93 the same day about an hr or so before in my other car and that turbo car ran fine. |

Jesus Christ dude. First you think your COPs are bad and look for new COPs or to borrow a set before actually just swapping them around and seeing if the same problem exists. I STILL think its a wiring issue. Either on the COP harness, the injector harness, OR at the MS itself. Swapping injectors take a total of 10 minutes and costs you $0. |
Tap each injector with something like a screwdriver handle while the car is running, if you haven't tried this already. It cured a stuck injector on my NA!
|
wtf! new injectors and decided to switch the stock FPR, and there's no fucking difference. fuck this pos.
|
If your cops are still ran by the stock igniter I would check that. Unfortunately only way to check is with another good igniter.
|
We found out the problem of Bryan's car. I'll let him tell you all about it.
|
i sense that this is going to be good......waiting.
|
so thanx to paul for coming over to look at the car, he discovered what is wrong. The timing got thrown off, badly. doing a timing belt on sunday and hopefully its the only problem
|
I know you have a new belt, but do you have a new tensioner, idler, and spring?
