Just bought this... Don't hate me...

I just won this...

Mazda : MX-5 Miata:eBay Motors (item 180399667881 end time Aug-29-09 19:29:05 PDT)

When figuring in what my time is worth, no way I could build one for that much.
:yippee:
Now I have to explain it to my wife...
:noes:

superslow 08-29-2009 10:36 PM

congrats. I don't think I could build one for that price either. Good luck with it all.

LS1>all...

seraph 08-29-2009 10:38 PM

That thing is gonna be a rocket!

ZX-Tex 08-29-2009 10:41 PM

I'm thinking I am going to strip it to the bone, get a hard top, get some big r-comps, upgrade the brakes, add some aero, and run it on the track. Keep it street legal so I can drive it to work on occasion and scare my coworkers on lunch rides. No a/c, no PS, no dash, no stereo, race buckets, 6-points, full cage maybe...

When I get bored with it, I'll add a turbo.

Current car = street duty
LS1 car = track bitch

Interior part out coming soon :D

FRT_Fun 08-29-2009 10:56 PM

You should keep the seat covers.

ZX-Tex 08-29-2009 10:58 PM

Yeah, honestly, that is the only reason I bought it. The seat covers are awesome :riaa:
What the hell is an LS1 anyway? Some kind of K&N filter?

NA6C-Guy 08-29-2009 11:05 PM

I FUCKING HATE YOU! DIE YOU V8 LOVING ------!

You really do fucking suck, but that is really really bad ass! That is a good price. If I could swing $12k, I would totally have one. I would never have the time or be able to put in the effort to build one myself though. I'm lazy like that.

Miatamaniac92 08-29-2009 11:15 PM

Oohhh, ahhhh

I canz drive have a ride at Harris Hill?? :makeout:

Chris

p51hellfire 08-29-2009 11:22 PM

ZX-Tex 08-29-2009 11:47 PM

Yeah, already thinking I will take it to H2R. The suspension might be a crap setup (compared to my Teins) but at least I could put the 6UL/NT01s on it.

If the Safety Nazis at H2R will let me give rides, I will be happy to. Normally they only allow two in the car if one of them is an instructor. H2R is a cornering track so I might get my ass handed to me by someone with a good suspension setup, at least until I get it set up correctly.

Hey, not that my Johnson is of short stature, but you could be on to something. It is better than Viagara. The car is blue after all, so it is not the 'little blue pill' but THE BIG BLUE PILL! Just think honey, I'll split you open like a porn star after I drive this car.

V8 ribbed, for her pleasure. Just look at that LS1 intake and tell me that does not scream French Tickler.

Stein 08-30-2009 12:15 AM

Outstanding purchase. Couldn't buy a car, drivetrain, swap kit for less than twice the money. Good job sir.

Based on my research I do believe you are correct, which is why I bought it. I have to have something that is stupid fast in order to scratch the same itch that motorcycle road racing scratches.

Kinda weird really. Must be the economy; no jobs, and the toys have to go. Two V8 Miatas had their auctions end today. This one, and a 5.0 liter conversion. Not sure what the reserve was on the latter, but the last bid was $9100 (under reserve).
Mazda : MX-5 Miata:eBay Motors (item 140341363916 end time Aug-29-09 14:44:17 PDT)

LS1>5.0 (all else being equal) so I think the latter needs to lower his price. I also thought the Viper gas cap on the 5.0 was kind of :riaa: that would be the first thing I would part out, unless I endurance raced it or something.

Saml01 08-30-2009 01:02 AM

I hope your dick doesnt get hard tonight and your women laughs at you. But only tonight, I wouldnt wish ED on anyone.

Congrats.

bayside blue 08-30-2009 01:08 AM

i saw that listing the other day. congrats on the purchace... i wanted to do a v8 swap but some how i spent 10k on turboing the car lol

I'll bet I have spent close to that honestly. Unless my wife threatens to leave me in earnest, I plan to keep them both :bigtu:

Holy shit I am so jealous. fucking badass

dustinb 08-30-2009 01:59 AM

Sick, it's got aftermarket cassette!

Congrats on the purchase, I'm so jealous.

chokeasphyxia 08-30-2009 02:13 AM

When I buy a part for a few hundred I worry about paying the bills, you're hardcore, nice buy.

chokeasphyxia 08-30-2009 02:14 AM

BTW I hate you.

icantthink4155 08-30-2009 09:22 AM

Dude was smoking in the car while making the video, you should make him take a $100 off the price! Looks very unassuming, someone pulls up next to you with their stereo loud they would have no idea what its got.

levnubhin 08-30-2009 09:27 AM

WOW JUST WOW!!. That's and awesome price man, congrats. Post burn out vid asap or ban.

I think that car has so much potential w/o removing stuff and making it race-car-like/light, that there's no reason to keep your turbo car. The v8 will give you all the power you need to keep the DD comforts. Have you seen the LS conversion for E36 (M3)? :D

Well I am going to keep the turbo car as the daily driver, and set this one up as a dedicated track car. I want to do things, like put a full cage in it, big splitter, rear wing, etc. that will make it a not very good DD. Plus no a/c in South Texas really sucks.

I have a buddy with an older M3 that knows ALL about that LS conversion. He WANTS one.

ZX-Tex 08-30-2009 04:45 PM

Wife took it well BTW :bigtu:

RotorNutFD3S 08-30-2009 08:06 PM

Congrats on an awesome deal and your wife taking it well! Although she'll probably find a way to use it against you down the road. lol

cueball1 08-31-2009 01:39 PM

Good job. Hope the car is flawless for you and well sorted. Buying another persons project is certainly the budget way to go.

With suspension, brakes, aero, interior you do realize you will dump another 5K into it right?!? I'm sure the wife will understand....

hustler 08-31-2009 01:52 PM

in for aero.

IcantDo55 08-31-2009 02:11 PM

This deal reminds me of all the LS RX7 swaps up for sale - but at half the price! ;) and I thought a $20k LS swapped FD was a great deal...

Nice car. How much did he get for it?

gospeed81 08-31-2009 03:26 PM

Wow Tex! I'm smiling the whole way through this thread.

You've got to feel good about that one!

I don't blame you one bit. I'm thinking about doing one myself...buying all the parts one at a time. Rear end for b-day...swap kit for Christmas etc...

That price for a finished one = fun now - year of downtime - head ache + $10K in pocket.

Can't beat it with a big stick or 99% of what's on the road.

NA6C-Guy 08-31-2009 03:26 PM

Not for $12k I would guess! :vash:

budget racer 08-31-2009 04:16 PM

TurboTim 08-31-2009 05:40 PM

kaisersoze 08-31-2009 05:42 PM

Was it a custom swap or one of the V8 roadsters/Boss frog kits?

jedduh01 08-31-2009 05:49 PM

Congrats... nice buy. Lots of car and equipment for that much $$

You planning driving it back to TX? Be sure to hit up the Eastern TN mountains on the way..

If you fly into Charlotte, and need a ride to the sellers place ill provide the transportation for a free ride in it of course.Looks about 1 hour outside of Charlotte. Hit me up with a PM if you want, possibly it would work out schedule etc.

Were having a 24hr auto-x this labor day weekend, you could come with it for. Plenty for people to drool over.

l_bader 08-31-2009 08:05 PM

And as luck would have it, I am heading that direction on business soon.

Do you need someone to drive it back to San Antonio?

hansel and gretel left bread crumbs. are you going to leave black stripes to find your way home?

Braineack 08-31-2009 09:14 PM

I'll trade you. I know you want the Brainmobile. I'll include a spare 1.6L....just install both.

Larry thanks for the offer. Tempting, but I think I am going to go get it myself. I want to be there in person to do the financial transaction, and to look the car over thoroughly to make sure everything looks good. Plus, I am due for a road trip anyway :D

Jedduh the seller is going to meet me at the Charlotte airport. But thanks for the offer just the same.

paNX2K&SE-R 08-31-2009 09:56 PM

I know the guy who built that car, he is local. $12k is a great price and definitely cheaper than the original cost to put it together. The 2nd owner lost several thousand dollars compared to what he paid Jesse for it.

Always good to hear something like that, especially after pulling the trigger.

ZX-Tex 08-31-2009 11:10 PM

:werd:

Thanks for the information.

I have wanted a V8 Miata for awhile now, and have researched it off and on. The last few months a buddy of mine and I, an FI Miataphile/roadracer/instructor, have been brainstorming over lunches about crazy ideas on how to build a bulletproof Miata road racer, and other things such as what classes one would race in, available tires, beating Vettes/Porsches etc. He went with me when I test drove an aluminum head Ford 5.0/T5 Monster last month. He and I have both been pricing out V8 builds, and have been coming to the same conclusions; it is expensive and/or time consuming. So when I saw this, I already knew what I wanted and pulled the trigger.

No worries, I still luvz the turboz :makeout: and who knows when I get the turbo motor back in the turbo car, and get it properly tuned, it will probably make as much power as the LS1, if not more.

Who knows, maybe I will turbocharge the LS1 one of these days. Think rear mount. A 500 WHP 2200 lb. Miata with aero/brakes/suspension/r-comps... now that would be a kick in the ass.

spoolin2bars 09-01-2009 01:42 AM

why wouldn't you swap out the suspensions on the 2 cars? it would be so easy. i've done it a few times before. your daily could use the comfy setup, and you know that monster is gonna need your tein setup. awesome deal too!

btw - if anyone is interested, my buddy has a ls2 fd rx7 for sale. can't begin to explain how awesome everything on it is. he only want's 18k for it.

Racingconcepts kit. They were the first to offer a kit but the guy who built the kits was in over his head and ended up ripping a lot of people off. The guy who built this car was a frequent poster on M.net and did a good job with it. It's probably the 2nd kit Racingconcepts made (the first being in their shop car which caught on fire 5 hours after it was sold).

This was a very good deal. Labor alone is a huge expense in an LSX build.

Because the LS1 car has different mass distribution and there the weight distriution during lateral and longitudinal acceleration will require a properly configured set of springs with corrected valving inside. For most normal people the differences would be ok but as a trackslag it would be hugely noticable.
I'd guess that under hard braking that thing will lunge forward like a headbutt.

Nice buy ZX. You've got two cars I want now :D

Dust 09-02-2009 02:11 AM

Interested to know if you get better gas mileage than a regular miata.

so you mean to tell me that a set of agx shocks with what look like stock springs are stiffer and better suited to a ls1 swapped miata, than a set of tein monoflex coilover's. jesus, thank god i haven't spent a fortune on tein's and still have my agx. i also didn't know that you couldn't swap springs on the tein's or that monoflex are so weak that you would require a revalve to run higher rate springs than std.
also wonder how much you guys think an all aluminum ls1 weighs compared to an iron block 1.8l. how about a 1.8 with a turbo, manifold, i/c piping, intercooler, and in this case, an a/c compressor, power steering system,etc.... sounds like you guys think they weigh 400lbs. more or
something.
thanks for clearing that up. good point.

ZX-Tex 09-02-2009 02:02 PM

According to what I have read, the LS1/T56/8.8 powertrain adds less than 200 lbs to the car, and that is not all in the front of course. I am still researching the specifics of this particular conversion kit, so it is possible that it places the engine slightly forward of say the FM kit, or even higher. But, I do not expect that it will be unmanageable to the point that it cannot be made track worthy with some proper spring selections and suspension tuning. Besides most of the Teins are designed to handle higher spring rates than what they come with, especially the adjustable ones. Yes I know Basics are not externally adjustable for compression/rebound :)

The 1.8L iron block is pretty heavy, even when empty. Ever pick one up?

Some have reported 30+ MPG on the highway with the LS conversions even when cruising at 70-75 MPH. I normally track mileage so I'll report in on what I get on the drive back to Texas. Not that I care so much for this car, but I am curious.

Dust 09-02-2009 06:43 PM

Thanks, it seems to me that the 1.8s don't get that good of gas mileage for the size and weight of the car. DOn't know how adding 3.9L to it will help, but most seem to be able to squeeze 30 on the highway in an f-bod, and higher in a vette.

zxtex, you know my post was directed towards r2jwilson's stupid answer for why you wouldn't just install the flex off your other car onto this one right? you just repeated everything i said (without the sarcasm). ahhh, oops! i could have sworn you had tein monoflex on your '99. well, those won't be enough for your monster, but maybe still better than what is on the car now!
