I'm switching to a 1.8 out of a 94 miata soon and I was set on doing the exintake mod. I have been reading and it now seems that the 94-97 miata engines already have the same cam on the intake and exhaust side. Did i read wrong or can i still get me cheap 10HP that everyone claims?

You can do the ex intake mod on 1.8's. Can't do it on 1.6's because the CAS is driven off the intake cam and if you bolt an exhaust cam over their, it has no provision to drive the sensor. FWIW I have a pair of cams from a 1.8 protege. Guess I should post them for sale.

actually ya I will need AGM's assistance on this one. However what I was getting at is that from what I read I think the 94-97 miata 1.8l already has the exintake mod done. The protege 1.8 is where you get the benefits. Can anyone confirm?

I'm pretty sure that the old information stating that the intake and exhaust cams of the 1.8 being the same has been proven incorrect. There are many people over at m.net who have done the exhintake mod and have noticed improvements. The only reason for angle grinder man is to hack off the CAS portion of the exhaust cam as the intake doesnt' have room for it. But if Angle Grinder Man can't visit you, Hacksaw Man will do just as well.

I did it, no they ARE NOT the same, just look at the part numbers. One is BP05 and the other is BP06, can't remember which one is which.

if your looking for better cams for the 94-97 i'm pretty sure the jdm BPT motors out of a BTX or GTR should be better than stock

So if someone with a 1.6 was to bring an intake cam (as an example) and an exhaust cam to a machine shop, couldn't the slot for the CAS be ground into the cam?

Or, in Joe Perez fashion, could you eliminate the CAS and run the exhaust cam as is?

adjustable cam gears are much simpler and proven effective. yet almost no one runs them.
so the whole thing is kind of moot anyway.

From what i've read they net about 8-10hp on an NA but how they cams will be setup after the mod they are actually supposed to be a good setup for a turbo car. Less overlap or something...

I'm thinking ported 94 head and exintake mod. Will still wind up being cheaper than the over priced 99 head and possibly give more gain. Cams should be good for at least 8 hp and port job maybe another 10hp on a turbo car. That approx. 20 hp...

Be sure to add in the adjustable cam gears and dyno time to get the cam timing right.

Nah many people have done the leg work for me. The information is out there already. As stated in this thread previously I'm not the first or last person to be doing this. I will be drilling the appropriate hole in the stock gear to give me the correct timing and calling it a day. Maybe ill get the cam gears for the bling to go with my protege valve cover.

Oh I know all about drilling the hole to address the timing issue. I was the first one to do it because I was to cheap to by the gears. All that info is based on Josh's dyno testing. I would suggest in the name of max gains to dyno yourself and set the gears. Also, his testing was all done on an NA motor. I haven't seen any testing with a turbo setup and adjustable gears to locate the hole accurately.

The 99 head is also worth $700 easy and i wont even be able to tell me friends i have a port and polished head.
