Long nose vs short nose crank

Long nose vs short nose crank
Ive done a bunch or searches and could quite find what I was looking for. Is there a data cutoff for when they went to the LNC from the SNC? Or can you only tell by the bolts on it(4 is short nose and more than 4 is LN right?)
