Lost coolant from radiator cap, no steam or overheating... bad cap?
Hey y'all. Been doing VEAL runs in my recently turbo'd '90 1.6 and today I ran into a coolant issue. I'm running an IL Motorsports reroute, Mishimoto 3-row rad, and a new OEM thermostat that was installed with the reroute. Prior to today nothing has leaked.
I was on my way home after about 45 minutes of normal "spirited" driving with the laptop connected. Sitting at a red light I noticed some splatter on the passenger side of the windshield that wasn't there when I started the drive. Pulled over and checked the bay, sure enough there's coolant all over the cold side and the overflow/expansion tank was empty. Checked all the fittings and hoses, everything looks fine and the majority of the coolant spray was right by the cap so I can only assume it came from there... since it never overheated (gauge stayed just past 190 mark and TunerStudio says max coolant temp was 196) and it wasn't actively leaking I just drove it home gently and let it cool off. Checked the radiator and the coolant level had dropped just below the top of the fins.
I've (now) read that Mishimoto caps are known to be **** and not hold pressure, is that all it was? If so, any recommendations for a replacement cap that doesn't suck?
