Making sportmaxxxx wheels work
Ok so I've read the threads on cr.net before about rolling/pulling the fenders to make them fit, but I wanted to clarify. I'm in a financial fuckhole that I cant seem to escape right now, so it looks like ordering 6UL's is out of the question for me (I still have a 5% chance I might bite the bullet, but its not the best idea right now).
I was talking with my bodyshop guy about just spraying my 16" sportmaxx wheels all black and I'll just run those for another year. Only problem is every time I get on it and the ass end squats down the tire rubs the fender, thus making it smoke and throw chunks of tire. And when I put the 16" ones on the front they hit the fender and pull on it. Right now I have them staggered with 15"s in the front and the 16"s in the rear, but I have another pair of 16"s to make a full set. I have KYB/FM springs combo with the FM mounts in the rear if that matters. But can any of you guys give me some pointers on how to make these fuckers work? It'll help me save some cash and get me back on the road. :) |
I have 15's with 225/50/15 all around. They rub on front but on the back they're great!
|
I had to remove the front liners and bend the tabs away. I took the rear liners out but I've heard the suspension will bottom out before it hits them. I ended up using a pipe (aka, bat) to "roll" the fenders. On top of all this I still had to make some spring spacers to raise my suspension up a tad. FCM had them on his site when I originally made mine, and he was kind enough to send me the drawings so I didn't have to engineer any myself. They don't seem to be on his site now though.

Try to find someone close by that has a fender roller you can borrow. Or I'll sell you mine for $200 shipped, haha. I've seen people mess up fenders pretty bad with a baseball bat. I'd try a rubber mallet on the lip of the fender before I went that route. Here's a picture of my rolled 90 fenders vs my stock 99 fenders:

I'd much rather put a set of black 6UL's on, but like I said money is asshole tight right now. So if I can make these work I plan on just painting them all black. |

The bodyshop used a towel and rubber mallet like you said. I was actually surprised he didn't have a roller and was doing it so caveman like. In any case I don't think they are rolled/pulled enough. Or am I running 16" and everyone else is using 15"? |

Guys that usually eff up their fender with a bat don't need to be doing any body work period. Not that hard, just needs patience and finesse.
First try ever, and I wouldn't do it any other way....and the bat was free. |
I'm running 15s with 225/50/15. That tire simple won't fit in the front due to diameter, where I'm sure a 225/45/15 would. I ended up running a 205/50/15 in the front in the interim. I understand your running 16s, but if you could specify what tire size/profile you are running it may make it easier for people to help.

you need 205/40/16's some guys even go 195/40/16 "stretched". you will have to roll and pull your fenders (get a roller). For tires i would buy from Tires easy they have the best deals.

Mine arrive tomorrow :D Vash, ditch the sport maxipads sell some extra shit you have lying around and get some 6uls, used if possible. |
^ i am with him 9 inches of wheel with the "correct" offset very nice! I am a college student so the $400 shipped maxipads are heavy and great for me. I am ready to get some safety goin on i need a rollbar next.......
|
Vash, I have a pair of those spacers curly mention if you end up needing them in the rear. They were made by FCM for the Tein crowd as the rake goes rearward on a lot of the chassis with the S-Tech springs. Mine is fine without them.

I am full time college student too as is a large portion of people on these forums. |
Yea guys, I really want the 6UL's but keeping these was my cheapest, easiest solution.
However.....I just went back to work yesterday and between those hours and today I'm already at 26hrs.....so with things looking up I just might be able to grab a set of 6UL's in no time! :) Now seeing they are sold out of the black 15x8, is there any reason I should not go to 15x9 on a daily driven car? I'm trying to avoid any issues I'm currently having....like rubbing and smoking the wheels on the fender. :giggle: |
i didn't notice if it was posted but take out your front fender liners, and then your airbag sensors(assuming you have an aftermarket steering wheel), my fronts no longer rub, and my rears never have...then again i have 15x7's

This is pretty much what the car looked like when I took it off the road over a year ago. I didn't do the stagger by choice, it just happened. I originally got the 16" set, but the fronts didn't fit at all, so I ordered a pair of 15"s to put there instead.
