My 04 MSM drove like a dream on the test drive with no lag or stutter or anything. Then after I owned it for two weeks, every single bad thing about the MSM ECU surfaced and pissed me off. I sold it at the beginning of this year and I really, really regret it. I love midrange torque.

curly 08-12-2014 10:24 AM

I wasn't sure where else to put this, but I took a little video on my test drive. This was quite hilarious.

cardriverx 08-12-2014 07:38 PM

So it seems the guy with the stock MSM won't take less than 10 grand. I want it but I don't want to pay more than 10 :/

So pay him $10,000.00?

curly 08-12-2014 08:07 PM

Give me $8000 and I'll buy the local one for $7500, and you can fly up and pry it out of my cold dead hands.

He seems unwilling to take a flat 10. I'll try to work some magic.

Curly - The one with the truck shifter? Ehhhhhh

curly 08-12-2014 08:19 PM

For a $500 pick up price, I'd rebuild a shifter :)

ThePass 08-12-2014 09:30 PM

The MSM in my driveway right now that I'm testing some stuff on is an absolute joy to drive... oh wait, it has 270whp, XIDAs, and really nothing left of an MSM... never mind.

JeffnLA 08-14-2014 11:52 PM

I have an 04 Mazdaspeed and live in CA.

I did replace the intake, downpipe, blow off valve and exhaust.

I put on poly bushings and xidas and got a corner balance.. (A few more things too)

I love this car. Took a drive to Stunt road today.. just awesome..

I drive it more then my 997 Carrera.

cardriverx 08-17-2014 02:18 AM

SO update,

The modded one for sale gave me an offer I don't think I am going to be able to refuse. $9400, and in return I get:

04 Mazdaspeed, 110k miles, Ohlins DFV coilovers, welded in roll bar, FM TB, FM intercooler, injectors, Blitz boost controller, FM downpipe, LC1, Toda flywheel, ACT clutch, MS PnP, AEM intake, Kaaz diff, M Tuned reroute, Koyo Rad, ARP wheel studs, Swaybars, and FM oil cooler. I also get all the stock parts to pass smog.

I priced it all out and I think I would be insane for not taking this. I mean some of the interior trim is missing due to the bar, the car is not the cleanest, and smog is my responsibility, but I mean shit thats a decent amount of $$ in mods.

I will post pictures if I get it :)

turbofan 08-17-2014 03:19 AM

Hope it works out. Sounds like a deal.

That's a freaking steal. What brand are the sways? I threw in some prices on parts you could sell if you wanted to return to stock and keep it that way. You'd basically have a ~$6000 MSM daily. And a lot of labor.

Suspension Techniques. Yeah I made a spreadsheet, comes out to about $5500 invested if I sold everything using conservative numbers. Another $500 for missing trim pieces and I would have a 6 grand stock MSM.

Of course I am not doing that haha. I mean the Ohlins rode so much better then the Flex's on my 94' during the test drive that I don't think I can part with them haha.

cardriverx 08-19-2014 02:25 AM

God dammit. That mother f***** reneged on the deal.. We agreed on 9400 but after I got my loan setup and everything today he came back this afternoon with a text saying "oh BTW there's a guy looking at the car in an hr and he might take it". So then he texts me later saying that this guy is going to take it but maybe if I will pay him more he'll hold it for me instead. I told him we agreed on 9400 and I maybe could add a hundred or two, to which he said no and sorry for the inconvenience. I pretty much quoted our agreeing on the price and in nicer words said fuck you.

Uh whatever.

turbofan 08-19-2014 02:40 AM

Yay for craigslist.

That 157k '04 is still sitting at the dealer here...

2004 MAZDA MX-5 MIATA MAZDASPEED*CONVERTIBLE* SUPER SHARP MUST SEE !!!

Edit: womp womp, nevermind, their site says it's sold...

And this one...

2004 Mazdaspeed MX5 Miata Excellent condition

And this $6800obo shit box

**MUST SEE RARE** - 2004 Turbo Mazdaspeed Miata MX-5 Convertible

turbofan 08-19-2014 01:27 PM

It's one of those things. When I was shopping for a shell I found no less than 5 clean title, sub-100k MSM's with asking prices under $10k (some under $9k) within 300 miles from here.

Now there are just those three, and they've either got a million miles, rust, or both. :/

Edit: That red one is pretty nice, but the red ones go for less than the other colors. When I was shopping, the gray ones were always at least $1000 more than a comparable red one.

cardriverx 08-19-2014 01:37 PM

I like that red one, nice low miles for a decent asking. Wonder if he would go to $9500? Would be a heck of a drive back down to LA but doable... Maybe I will give him a call.

You've got a place to stay in any number of PDX miata owner's places, mine included. At the very least, if you schedule ahead, one of us could probably get you from the airport, and drive you to the car.

Definitely call the guy first and chat with him. In my mind it would have to at least be worth the risk of just returning to the airport and buying another ticket back to LA. There's always that chance. After experiencing and falling in love with our Portland beer of course.

turbofan 08-19-2014 02:10 PM

Totally doable. bought mine in LA and drove it here :)

cardriverx 08-19-2014 02:27 PM

Thanks I really appreciate it!

Is rust something I need to look out for there? I have gotten spoiled by the LA climate.

turbofan 08-19-2014 02:41 PM

No. Rust is typically not an issue here. That car came from out of state.

curly 08-19-2014 03:16 PM

Zero rust issues in the NW, until you start getting into early 80's domestic vehicles, forgotten for years in the the upper mid-west regions of Washington or something. Not here though.

And as Ed said, that rusty MSM is from South Dakota.

cardriverx 08-19-2014 05:46 PM

So I called the red one, seemed like a nice guy. Hasn't had it long, said his wife doesn't want to drive stick haha. Car is from Seattle until it was around 20k miles, he's the third owner. Apparently he has a bunch of records and such too. No flaws or anything wrong, seems like a nice car...hm. Wonder if I could get him down to 9500...

curly 08-19-2014 06:15 PM

You called and didn't try to negotiate while you had him there?

cardriverx 08-19-2014 06:41 PM

Nah, just asked if he is flexible which he is. I need to see how tough it is to get there too. If I decide to go further I will call tomorrow and negotiate.

If I like it, would you be able to maybe do a test drive for me? I'll toss you some cash or beer or something in exchange haha.

curly 08-19-2014 06:48 PM

Yeah I can do that. I'd be available this Friday. He's about a 40 minute drive from me. I'm ~25 minutes from down town, but he's on the north side of said town.

turbofan 08-19-2014 07:06 PM

ah man wish I could go. Curly is a lousy negotiator

Lokiel 08-19-2014 08:30 PM

Send Curly in first/independently to ridiculously lowball him, then later, make your offer (minus the cost of beer/beverage-of-choice for Curly).

triple88a 08-20-2014 01:14 AM

In before Curly stiffs you and buys it for him self.

JeffnLA 08-20-2014 03:13 PM

Their are currently at least 7 Mazdaspeed Miatas on Criagslist in the Los Angeles area.

Mazdaspeed MX-5/Miata
Rare Lava Orange Mica 2005 Mazda MX-5 Miata Mazdaspeed
2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata
2005 Mazda Miata MX-5 MAZDASPEED Convertible 2D
2004 Mazdaspeed Miata, 6 speed
2004 Mazdaspeed Miata MX-5
2004 Mazdaspeed Miata with mods

turbofan 08-20-2014 03:40 PM

First one is in Arizona. Otherwise a nice car, and comparable with the one here.

Second one I posted already. Salvage title. Not sure how a car ends up with original paint and salvage title. Would be worth looking into further? Perhaps a mistake?

Third one is positively stupidly priced.

Fourth one is unbelievably nice, but not something you'd want to track. Why pay such a huge premium for low miles when a 70-90k miler would work just as well for his purposes?

Fifth one looks like it's been wrecked and fixed, and not extremely well either.

Sixth one is the same one as the third one

Seventh one is the one he already tried to buy and the seller jewed out on him.

I mean... just pulling them out of craigslist isn't super helpful, it seems.

He went back on his word cause he's a greedy bastard. Hence he's a Jew. Only slightly politically incorrect, but this is the internet after all.

turbofan 08-20-2014 03:52 PM

I was terrified that would happen to me with the car I bought in LA. I was sooo nervous that he would find someone else who would offer him a bit more.

Gotta move quick!

cardriverx 08-20-2014 04:52 PM

I think jewed out explains what happened fairly well. Yeah Turbofan explained it all very well, Jeff.

I hate that the first one you posted is in AZ. Why the heck are you posting it in LA then? Blah.

Currently working with Curly, may move on the one in Portland. The seller is supposed to get me more pictures today.

18psi 08-20-2014 05:06 PM

I hate it when people do that.

Some douche in OR/WA keeps posting up cars here in CA, multiple cars multiple times.

Hey guys, can you take a look at this picture he sent? Specifically the bottom right on the silver metal cover. It almost seems like there is some red spray paint overspray on it... Am I crazy? Asked him about it and he said the lighting was bad and to come look at it.

Attachment 235554

turbofan 08-20-2014 07:22 PM

well yeah that's definitely overspray. Front bumper's been painted.

turbofan 08-20-2014 07:27 PM

Not the end of the world. Negotiation opportunity.

You're financing, right? Will your bank finance a salvage title car?

have you talked to the guy with the lava orange? Depending on what all happened it might be a great way to go.

Mobius 08-20-2014 07:28 PM

Huh. Could be reflecting the bottom of the hood?

I'm not a bodywork guy, but I'm having trouble of thinking what/how they would be spraying and accidentally overspray onto that piece, when it is so easy to remove.

Dunno. But Curly and I will be happy to go see it for you.

edit: OIC, yeah if they were doing the bumper I could see how that could happen. But front bumper respray isn't that big a deal. They get scratched easy, and they bend a bunch before they break.

I highly doubt it. I mean if I could talk that guy down low enough I could just buy it outright. Never dealt with buying a salvage car through.

If you zoom in you can really see it's not a reflection. Currently talking to Curly.

turbofan 08-20-2014 07:38 PM

No need to zoom, it's painfully obvious.

It's worth looking at, but seriously... give the guy with the salvage orange one a call. Really.

If he is a complete moron and clueless, then you'll know it's a waste of time. If he's straightforward about what happened, if he knows about the car, etc and is willing to sell it cheap, then it's a strong option. Salvage will always be worth less, but if you're going to mod much and track it, why not?

Just a thought. I think it's worth a phone call.

Then again, I DO currently have my own thread titled "REBUILD ALL THE SALVAGE MIATAS! ASS!" So what do I know.

curly 08-20-2014 07:38 PM

Möbius would probably come with if he's free tomorrow. Second set of miata trained eyes never hurts.

So here is the pictures of the damage on the salvage car. The guy said he bought it after it was fixed, and there was no mechanical damage he knows of. Eh I dunno the front looks pretty banged up.

The important picture is missing - where the bumper is off and you can see if the frame horns and/or rails got crumpled in the collision. If so walk away.

Are you able to adequately see enough of the frame by getting under the car or does the bumper need to be off? Never worked on an NB.

18psi 08-20-2014 08:14 PM

I bet you per the insurance company estimate there is about 1k worth of damage to rear, and probably 2k worth to front.

So still not enough to salvage a 9-10k msm.

bet it has frame damage

Thanks dood. Not to mention it's in El Monte which is a shady town (at least my girlfriend that grew up there says so) haha :giggle:

what mobius said.

He just said he bought it fixed so I assume the PO's insurance had it done at a shop.
