Mental

I though I'd start a new thread about John's car. He's the guy here that has built all of our cars for the last 4 years or so. This will be his daily, weekend toy and might see one or two trackdays a year. He's not a racer, just cruises around the track. The blower and bracket are preproduction Jackson Racing hardware from the upcoming CARB legal kits. The piping and I/C are all one off. ECU is one of Crushers spare MS3x's. As you can see, John likes a tidy engine bay. Don't ask me how he did all of that. This car probably has 1500 hrs into it. The interior shows the same level of one off customness.

Engine is an OEM rebuild with NB1 9.5:1 pistons + forged rods. It is setup to run on pump gas now. We plan to experiment with a flex fuel sensor to control not just fuel and spark but also boost. The WG on the manifold will bleed off excess boost at high rpm when running on pump gas, also controlled by the ECU. This car shares IC, piping and WG setup with Deviate.

More pics to come.

I like it.

What's the story with the two big vacuum lines going to bulkheads on the firewall? Guessing manifold one is going to the ECU.

Is the one off the booster going to a remote mounted vacuum canister? Stock pedal setup?

EO2K 09-03-2014 05:36 PM

Glorious work to be sure. Is he bringing the car out to Laguna this weekend?

At the risk of sounding like I'm on CR, we are definitely going to need interior pics after a lead in like that. Or just more pics in general. The name seems fitting :bigtu:

John does pretty amazing BECAUSERACECAR work, I'm not surprised his personal projects look this good and actually work.

So what ever happened to that stripped NA chassis "out behind the shop" he mentioned in the build thread?

Still here. Dipped, seam welded, full of structural foam, languishing in our back yard. Probably as stiff as you'll ever get an NA chassis without a cage.

$400 takes it

Emilio to do this car justice it needs a full spread on here, in luring the underside, interior, matching wheels/handles/hardtop chrome, etc. saw it in person last Saturday and it was beautiful.

Preface this with a big thanks to Emilio @ 949 Racing for his help in acquiring parts, and Alex @ 2ndChanceRoadsters for help with parts and body work (to say the least.)

About 2 years ago I picked up this:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

Originally I was going to try and create a high mileage commuter car but...

There were a few 25 hour races to win, National Championships on the line, and more cars to build.

And so I never felt like working on my own car. I just drove it, wracking up some 60,000 miles in those 2 years. Along the way I acquired a bunch of parts, a wrecked 2005, and then I got this:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

A nearly perfect 1992, automatic tub. So few dents on it. But then I did this to it:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

For a mere $1900, I had every last bit of paint, seam sealing, and sound deadening removed. Which meant that I had to add it all back, and Mazda puts that stuff in places that you can't reach. And it looked like someone had stood on the rear part of the car (right behind the top) leaving some big dents. They had also lifted the car from spots that bent under the weight. But I tried to get it resealed and primed. I had it seam welded. I put structural foam in the frame rails. But in the end I was not making good progress on it and set it aside.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

In the mean time the daily driver was getting tired. It now has 290,000 miles and I decided that I would make it the project car... since it still has paint and seam filler in all the critical ares.

So I stripped it and sent it out to for paint and body work.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

The body shop stripped the paint... not me.

This hole serves no purpose these days, hole delete.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410670737

Not too much excitement here. Lots of painting and painting prep. Installed the Frog Arms.

Painted the inside of the trunk.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

Said frog arms.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

Put plates over all the holes in the firewall that are no longer being used.

And put 8lb structural foam inside the frame rails. The foam is nasty stuff when it is active and expanding. It is so sticky that you can't really get it off of any thing it touches. Once it is hard, it takes a hammer and chisel to remove it, so I took care to not get it anywhere I didn't want it. I put bolts in all the holes that are threaded in case I want to use them in the future. You can see the blue tape over all the other holes. In retrospect, I would have used better tape on the bigger holes. The foam was able to push the blue tape off. So even with all the prep it still was a mess.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

I would tilt the car to control the flow. It flows well for about 45 seconds after mixing starts and then it just gets messy. I would mix for 20 seconds, leaving me about 25 seconds to pour.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

I marked a line on the inside of the cups to measure the 2 part liquids. You mix it 1:1. I used a third disposable cup to mix in. It would ruin anything else, so you might as well just throw it away. A supply of cheap funnels is also handy. These are the cone shaped paper cups with the tip cut off. Cheapest solution I could find. Cover the floor if you care about it. It will take force to remove the foam from the floor.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

Here you can see the foam in the rails. I forgot to take some pictures, but my hands were covered in foam stuff and I did not want to touch my phone. I had already used a drill with wire wheel to remove some foam and then painted some. I had to add some holes to the rails to get better distribution.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671227

I topped off the holes with a paintable caulk to prevent water getting in the rails since it now has no way out. Next time I will foam before paint. I was not sure I was going to do it. Thinking about doing the windshield frame in 4lb spray in foam. Still 2 part foam, but pressurized in 2 cans with a mixing nozzle.

Trying to increase the stiffness and reduce chassis flex and twist. The car I started and abandoned had the foam and seam welding. I dream of S2000 levels of stiffness in a Miata, but will settle for better than an NB in an NA.

Been knocking out electrical for the last couple of weeks. No reason to post pictures of the mess. I am not real happy with the outcome, but so far everything works. I figure I am about 95% done inside the car, 80% in the trunk and 20% under the hood. Need to install the engine and get busy on that harness.

This picture shows part of my interior lights. I took a NB windshield header trim piece, drilled a line of holes, installed a LED light strip, and wired it to the stock NB interior light switch. Not a great picture, but I think you can see what I was shooting for.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671394

Got sidetracked on building a new race car, AKA earning money. But we are back on track now. E thinks we need a new name for this car. Stupid really applies to the chemically dipped, seam welded, foam filled NA tub that I have sitting outside the shop (anyone need a project tub?)

On to business. I found the time to put the engine in and do the engine wiring. The wiring on the engine was nearly a 40 hour job... so if you want me to duplicate it, plan on spending $2000 to start. I did not take any pics of that process, but here are the near finished results.

Tight fit for the wires. I smoothed sharp edges and paid attention to bending and chafing areas.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1410671531

I will tighten things up once I do the final install. I have finished the engine wiring and moved on to the headlights but need to take more pictures. NB and NA headlights are wired differently. NB uses ground switching for HI/LO beam, and NA uses power switching. I have an NB wiring harness in this car with NA headlights. Took me a few minutes of thinking to figure out the work around without pulling the harness... relays to the rescue.

Satisaii 09-14-2014 01:21 AM

Did not make it to MRLS. Just got it running a couple of days ago. Took it to Kinod last night and drove it home for the first time. Need to rack up some break in miles before we start to tune it in earnest. I have some more pictures to add to the album before I can make more updates.

Big thanks to 949Racing, Jackson Racing, and Alex from 2nd Chance Roadsters for making all of this possible.

What's the purpose of waste gate in back of the intake manifold?? I have never seen this done to a supercharged miata..

Whoah, amazing job on this thing. Quite a few things I have never seen done, for instance the wastegate above.

I too would like to know more about the IM/wastegate.. I understand how it works in theory, but that is strange!

I read what he wrote dumb ass, in fact I read it on his real thread in mazdaroadster.net, still this doesn't explain many things like why he puts a filter while the waste gate is venting to atmosphere. It doesn't make sense to me. did you ever think of that you fucking idiot??

It's not like there is a wealth of information on using a wastegate in this location or anything. Calm down asshole.

Clearly it's something you would only do with a centrifugal supercharger running ALLOFIT, but how does venting excess pressure there effect the flow to cylinder 4 vs cylinder 1?

EO2K 09-14-2014 12:01 PM

Emilio actually explained it pretty well in the 95R thread. Read: https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...project-63125/

Also: like the man said, chill the fuck out. Its not like everyone reads every thread on this forum every day.

That's a good question. Its a squaretop so its got a pretty open plenum, maybe the guys have a header with 4 EGTs they could throw on and see what happens?

StealthNB 09-14-2014 12:24 PM

What piss me off the most is that asked a polite question and then some idiot jumps insulting me for no reason. My apologies to the OP and John the owner of Mental. About the wastegate connected to intake manifold, I read Emilio's thread and thanks for sharing it EO2K. Still do not know what wastegate spring is best for Rotrex Supercharger, and this particular setup. I know Tial sells something like a 3psi spring for supercharger setups tough.

About the filter location in the wastegate, wouldn't it make more sense tu run a pipe down to vent under the tranny??

petrolmed 09-14-2014 01:08 PM

This is too hot to handle! Great build so far, am ready for numbers and videos.

oregonmon 09-14-2014 01:14 PM

This build is really great. Thanks for sharing.

We had the idea of using the wastegate to put an upper limit on the boost and to change that limit based on the fuel we can get. I looked into it a bit more and found some people doing it on Honda as traction control. They use the weakest spring and a 4 port valve... so I just copied that. One guy tried running no spring and got his boost pressure down to 1 psi, but damaged the diaphragm doing it.

The filter is there to baffle the noise and keep oil from spraying out. And keeps thing from going back in that way, just in case. We will pull it off and see if it makes a difference.

We put the valve in the manifold... in a round about way. I was at Hytech talking to John about it. We were having issues about placement, supporting the weight, keeping it out of harm's way, and I mentioned that I really would want to control the pressure with the wastegate in the manifold. He mentioned that he had done that on Indy cars back in the day. He said it was no problem to do it right there on the back and we went for it.

Did not consider if it would impact the flow on #4. If you think about it we are not going to be getting rid of a lot of air. Right now Emilio is using all of it. My stockish setup will get more pressure (less flow) and I want to limit my power to non break things level (been there, don't like breaking.) I might be bleeding off 4 psi. We have are having a test header made to do cylinder trim. Might be fun to see if we can tell.

k24madness 09-14-2014 08:11 PM

Let me elaborate on wastegate control of the Rotrex since I have done a LOT of research on the topic.

Centrifugal super chargers (Rotrex) build boost with RPM. Most motors are limited by fuel or stock internals so the SC must be geared towards those limits. The other approach (popular in the V8 muscle car world) is to gear the SC for max power and bleed off boost via wastegate to limit cylinder pressure. With wastegate control if your motor had a limit of 200tq you would be able to bleed off boost to cap power at that level. If your wastegate is controlled by your ECU you can further tailor the power curve for class restrictions or fuel limits. Think of the wastegate controlling power output not so much boost. With the MS3 you can have a funky boost curve to accomplish a flat torque or HP curve.

Another advantage is being able to dump boost (ecu controlled) after redline for those money shifts. This will give the intake valve springs some help by not having boost pressing against them.

Sorry to ramble on in your thread Mental but this is something that most people don't fully understand cause it's a relativity new approach with supercharging. I expect we will see more of it in the future.

Props, this is fantastic.

Sorry if I missed it, but what specifically was used for they gray coating on the tub/engine bay/sub frames etc?

Satisaii 09-25-2014 08:41 AM

Just paint from Home Depot. Meant to be easy to repair when scratched since it comes in spray and brush forms.

Holy jesus. This is orgasmic levels of attention to detail. There are so many things you did that I would have done if I would have had a longer time to know more things about Miatas before rebuilding my car. Also if I would have had more funds to play with as well.

Major respect John, you just made me think my car was shoddy and dirty in comparison!

Dat engine bay!

Such a clean car. Inspires me to redo my lazy areas. Could you elaborate on your steering column? That looks like a sweet ass and big titties.

Small change to the look. I see I have not updated this thread in a while...

We blew the engine while tuning when the cam angle sensor decided to quit working for a split second at WOT. On to Rev B for the wiring, ECU, and engine. Since this forum has a 15 minute time out, I will break this up.

I decided to make an intermediate harness to go between the ECU and the engine. I will make all the final connections at the end of the PPF. This gives me 5 smaller harnesses to make later on. Figured it would be easier to repair and make changes to down the road. Also puts the bending and moving in the harness over a nice large section vs a hinge the way I had it before.

Modified heater core to use AN fittings since AN fittings are way cooler than whatever Mazda would do.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432826005

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432826005

And now I know why Mazda did not use AN fittings. What a PITA. Many aluminum tubes were sacrificed to do this. Not sure it won't leak. I will fill the system with water and use a pressure tester before putting any anti-freeze in it. Probably use some stop leak in it too.

Added one of these.

Bring on the corn power!

Engine and transmission are back in. Upgraded to a 6 speed since we knew we would break the 5 even before the corn power. Thanks again to Emilio for donating one of the used race spares to the cause. More wiring to come soon.

Cheap bastard only bought black wire. I have a couple of wiring problems to sort out before it runs again.

I think that gets it back up to date. Just driving it NA, breaking it in, getting ready for tuning and hoping nothing else breaks in the mean time.

Yes it is. I am using the Fab 9 COP kit.

EO2K 05-28-2015 02:12 PM

That makes sense. It looks like you are on a naked MS3 Pro (not a PnP) so you would need an external igniter anyway. The Fab9 cops are very minimalist, this goes well with your build :)
