Miata Turbo keychain

I can create a design that we all think looks good () and get it manufactured over at shapeways.com in metal (or plastic if you prefer).

Cost may be a bit on the high side to do it in metal, see some random example here:
Shapeways | keyfob111

But if you pick plastic you can always just paint it and call it a day..

Any interest in something like this?

wayne_curr 11-10-2009 07:02 PM

Make it a bottle opener and i'm in lol.

ctxspy 11-10-2009 07:14 PM

i think that can be arranged

Oscar 11-10-2009 07:24 PM

in for bottle opener

airbrush1 11-10-2009 07:29 PM

In for bottle opener!

curly 11-10-2009 08:04 PM

Bottle opener! Get it done before the frakin' t-shirts.

ctxspy 11-10-2009 08:06 PM

workin on it.. right now i'm fighting with the mesh extract from the 3d cad program.. the nurbs surfaces are OK but once put into mesh things get a little ugly.. i will try to eliminate some of the filleted edges and see if that helps.

y8s 11-10-2009 08:24 PM

oh shit a little miataturbo bottle opener would be great to replace my generic fish one.

ctxspy 11-10-2009 08:52 PM

OK so this i what i have so far.. (pics coming soon).

It says TURBO (O is the turbo icon).. that is 1 cm wide, sitting on top of a flat plate which will be the lever part of the opener.. on the other side of the flat plate it can say either: MIATA or MX-5... or, if i shrink the font, both.. Ideas?

kotomile 11-10-2009 08:57 PM

I like the idea of keeping MIATA and TURBO side-by-side myself.

Marc D 11-10-2009 08:58 PM

im down for one!

Here's the 1st set of renderings, don't be too harsh!

Kotomile -- regarding keeping the words side by side, i tried that but it gets rather long & narrow, unless i make the font relatively small, and then have dead space above and below.

ctxspy 11-10-2009 09:20 PM

If you guys are really looking for bottle-opener functionality then it would have to be made of metal.. i will try to get this uploaded to shapeways to get an estimate..

i am worried it may not be cheap because of the thickness..

K20 Mini 11-10-2009 09:24 PM

I have had this guy xnology.com - custom cut laser junk make me some one off key chains in the past he is very reasonable and as a bonus he also does bottle openers!

ctxspy 11-10-2009 09:29 PM

nice. That's a different technology, probably would be cheaper than the shapeways thing i'm working on..

The difference is that w/shapeways you are actually doing 3d printing, so provided you're a good artist / designer (which i'm not) then you can make practically any shaped objects.

ctxspy 11-10-2009 09:33 PM

Shapeways | Miata Turbo Keychain

lol ok so that went faster than i thought.

Take a look at that (click the "view in 3d" to get the whole idea), let me know what you think.

At this point anyone can go buy one off of there... If you're really interested in a 'group buy', i can get a few of them and forward them on to you.. The reason is that they charge $25 minimum, and this thing is a little less than that, so you'd be throwing away a few bucks if that was all you bought.

The other thing is, i have no idea if 1) the shape will be an effective bottle opener, and 2) if the metal process used will be strong enough, though others seem to have made bottle openers on that site.

"invalid model id"

edit: found it, search for "miata turbo", go figure.

ctxspy 11-10-2009 10:06 PM

Shapeways | Miata Turbo Keychain

fixed link.. i had to delete & reupload complete model, i guess it got a new "id".

Or.. did you guys want something simpler like this (Let's call this "Design B") :noob:

I can make the lettering raised or cut out.

According to shapeways that's actually cheaper, a little over $10 / unit..

I need feedback guys!

levnubhin 11-10-2009 10:46 PM

That ^^ I like.

I prefer model B with a few modifications. I think the actual turbo logo needs to be incorporated into it.

I like the debossed design B!

I want. I must combine desire for boost with desire for beer.

leatherface24 11-11-2009 09:58 AM

need the bottle opener. mine broke last week due to years of abuse :)

ctxspy 11-11-2009 10:22 AM

OK so i will work on incorporating the logo styled "O" into the design-b tonight and let you know when done.

triple88a 11-11-2009 11:07 AM

You people seriously use bottle openers? I use whatever is closest.. fork, spoon, window sill.. I know a chick that opens a bottle with her teeth

I'll think about it and see what i can come up with.

leatherface24 11-11-2009 11:15 AM

If this does not happen soon along with the shirts, you will be subjected to this repeatedly:

l_bader 11-11-2009 03:41 PM

+1 on design B, however I think the key-ring hole will need to be moved inboard a little more. Positioned where it is might lead to breaking...

- L

ctxspy 11-11-2009 03:45 PM

I just want you guys to know: You can go to that link and buy either one today :)

I'll still be working on improvements, but once it's up there, you can get it... The only 'benefit' i can offer is to buy a few of the cheaper ($10) ones together and then re-ship them to you, so you dont' have to pay the $25 minimum to the site..

kotomile 11-11-2009 03:50 PM

Well, if you were to buy a bunch to do that I'd want the MIATATURBO one (last one posted).

ctxspy 11-11-2009 03:56 PM

OK let me get back to it tonight, i'll fix the points above (move the hole in a little, fix the O to be a turbo).. I also have a similar style bottle opener here (at work) so i'll take that home and measure it to make sure the one i'm making should also actually be functional too :D

No guarantees that the metal won't break.. I just want to be clear on that.. i've never worked with metal w/this company before.

Ben 11-11-2009 05:46 PM

If you spin the logo around the other way, you can punch out the key ring hole at the turbo inlet. :)

Good one Ben, This way you can even make the wording bigger.and add the O to be a 3d outlet from a turbo.

Ben 11-11-2009 06:59 PM

exactly. even chamfer the compressor inlet if you can. hell, since it's 3D, see if you can radius the outlet as well. that would be pimp.

ctxspy 11-11-2009 07:05 PM

you guys are scaring me. :)

Ben, triple88a -- the only problem i see with this suggestion is that if the keychain is designed as sunken and not raised, then the raised part of the "O" in turbo is the center, not the letter itself.. so if i cut that part out, it may look a little confusing.

I think for now i'll keep the keyring hole on the other side (i've just extended the whole thing by a few mm).

PLEASE GIVE ME A CONSENSUS: Should the "O" just be stylized like in the mt.net logo above, or should it try to more faithfully look like a relief of an actual turbo? (turbine fins inside, round housing & in/outlets vs. flat surface etc).

leatherface24 11-11-2009 07:46 PM

Make it look like a turbo

OK take a look at this :sadwavey: (no idea if the turbo fine detail will print, about to upload to shapeways.)

LINKS TO LOOK / BUY:
Shapeways | Miata Turbo Keychain - Design B - Raised

Shapeways | Miata Turbo Keychain - Design B - Sunken

NOTES:
1) Buy one and let me know if it prints out OK ;-)
2) Don't know about strength of the metal, but from what i've read it should be strong.
3) I can take paypal $$ (please no credit cards as they take a stupid % off..) Once I get enough orders (2 or 3 depending), or in a couple of days (i'm impatient) I will place an order. PM me if you want one.
4) Takes around 10 days turnaround for them to get to me.. I will then ship them out.
5) You can just go ahead and buy them yourselves if you either don't care about the $25 minimum, OR are buying more than one..
6) the shapeways website is a little buggy here & there.. make sure to confirm the material (steel) before completing purchase.

if you DO get one before me, post it up :D

only thing would change is rotate the turbo(o) up just a tad to mimic the the sites original logo!

triple88a 11-11-2009 08:58 PM

Man what program are you using. Very low mesh...

ctxspy 11-11-2009 09:03 PM

i'm using Rhino 3D v3.0.. Got it back during college for a nice student discount.

I can adjust the mesh to whatever it needs to be.. Don't be fooled by the crappy pictures on the shapeways site. It over smooths everything... I can't guarantee the final result, but I checked the mesh I uploaded to them and it looks 100% detailed.

WonTon -- can't rotate the turbo, it would go off the edge of the keychain causing the universe to possibly explode.

KPLAFIN 11-11-2009 09:05 PM

Before I go sign-up and all that crap to order one..mind checking with them to see if they ship to APO addresses (military overseas, as long as they use USPS they should but just wanna make sure as some places don't) if not I'm down for ordering one through you.

I checked the site, it says they ship worldwide with UPS.. can you have it delivered somewhere local to where you're at? an acquaintance's house or maybe they have something like "goin postal" that will take it?

Otherwise, yeah just paypal me the cost and i'll buy one.

-----------------------

Good (odd) news.. Someone bought the original more 3d design i put up, it's on the front page of the site for the moment! i'm so excited!... Was it one of you guys?

Also as i said i'm impatient... i bought one of each "design b", will take pictures once they arrive. :giggle:

Cspence 11-11-2009 09:58 PM

That really looks like a cool site... its a convenient way to make "one off" things....is there a limit on the size of things they can make??

ctxspy 11-11-2009 10:04 PM

yeah.. like 1 to 2 feet cubed... The cost gets prohibitive with volume though..

Figure this little keychain is $10... if you were to scale it up 200% in every direction, that would result in 2x2x2=8 times the cost, so $80...

I love the concept, but as they describe on the site, it's still a lot of manual labor so i guess that'll keep the prices high..

One day i will own one of those machines and be printing all sorts of crap!

Cspence 11-11-2009 10:40 PM

Yeah...I found that out as I am exploring their site....still cool shit! ordering some christmas presents right now

ZX-Tex 11-12-2009 03:29 PM

Hopefully these are not aluminum. The last aluminum bottle opener I tried to use had worn down on the lip, and, as we say in Texas, was as useless as tits on a Boar Hog. It would not grab the edge of the cap.

ctxspy 11-12-2009 03:48 PM

the website says stainless steel.

I make no guarantees as to functionality :) I did order one of each for myself, so I cn post back real life pictures as well as how well it works.

KPLAFIN 11-12-2009 04:01 PM

I'm not trying to completely thredjack here but all of this bottle opener talk I just have to share:

LaRue Tactical Beverage Entry Tool LT-205

Greatest bottle opener ever, twist off, cans, and regular bottles all covered :giggle:

I'l be grabbing at least one of these though once someone posts up some actual pictures.

tyson87 11-12-2009 06:18 PM

im retarded

Bassmachine 11-12-2009 06:33 PM

Approved and i just got paid so get this shit in the works before my girlfriend finds out i have money.

ctxspy 11-12-2009 07:05 PM

ok i'll say it again :hustler:

ANYONE CAN GO THERE AND BUY ONE. RIGHT NOW. OR EVEN NOW.

So if you want one, u can definitely just sign up and buy it.

OR pm me, and i'll tell u where to send the $.. when enough people send me cash (two or three depending on which ones people want) i will buy it and then re-ship to you once it arrives.

So once again... if you want one (or one of each) just go buy it on the site, it's live, ready to buy.
