My $20 custom airbox
I am in the process of installing my MP62 coldside SC. I figured I would post a few pictures of my $20 custom airbox mod.
I used corregated plastic and 0.5 x 0.5 aluminum angle. The filter is a 7" round x 4" deep K&N that has an offset hole. The area marked with an "X" in the 1st picture will be cut out of the firewall. I just haven't done it yet. I should be pulling 99% of my intake air from the high pressure cowl. Here are some pictures... http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB1.jpg http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB2.jpg http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB3.jpg http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB4.jpg http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB5.jpg http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB6.jpg http://tidewatersportscarclub.com/SHAWN/AB7.jpg |
Nice work!

Damn that is nice work. Good job!

Wow, that's perfect - and easy for the blower. Though I think that's the wrong filter for the box. You need something that keeps that hole open - like a domed foam filter or smaller gauze. I just wouldn't want the filter covering the hole, or you're going to only use about 20% of the filter which will be restrictive (not to mention get dirty quick).

How much does your engine rock? Make sure to allow for this.

Cupcar, I will re-evalute the filter situation once I get the car together and running. The hole in the firewall is above the filter, so I don't think I will have an issue. Only time will tell. |
after you cut that hole through the firewall, be sure to post pics on miata.net under "check out what I did to my sunburst" :)
They'll trip. |
 ^
yeah- I see now, it's under that seam. |

great work btw! is that the FFS setup? i always wondered why the filter was wrapped around under the car... |

cause this would be impossible to do with A/C and ABS. |

I think it "could" work with AC, no chance with ABS. Being that my AC has been gone for years, I was never able to experiment with that.
Yes this is a FFS somewhat custom kit. |
nice work. wanted something like that for my current turbo build but the cowl is just too far back from the turbo inlet.

I did something similar to my first Sunburst, only on the other side of the engine....and yes there were a number of people that thought I was mad. Hasn't stopped me from thinking of doing it again for my DIY setup with my current sunburst, and there is only 55 of that model down under. J |
looks nice

I cut Tom's BRG headlight lid without even thinking. I believe a few people commented about it, then i thought how fucking lame, it's a miata, regardless of the color/trim. a starburst yellow isn't going to drop any panties, therefore, it's ok to cut up and abuse.
