My build.
I've wanted a miata for 10 or so years now. I've always been into bikes, so I never had a chance to have another toy. October 10th that changed.
This is before: http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...ike2before.jpg And after: http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...cident_001.jpg The wife said no more bikes, with which I tend to agree (for the time being), so I picked up this '99: http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu..._001.sized.jpg My daily driver is a 2001 Audi S4, and the last toy car was a '84 VW Rabbit with a 1.8T3/T4 swap. It put down over 300 to the front wheels depending on how well I could get the SDS to work. So, the Miata needs a little more power. First things first though, in went the rollbar, suspension, and brakes. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata2_001.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_001.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_025.jpg Simplifed pad changes. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_028.jpg I got home today and had some packages on the front step. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_032.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_034.jpg Nice stack of dimes. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_035.jpg Potato. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_036.jpg Neighbor pleaser. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_038.jpg Beefy. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_041.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_042.jpg Here's what'll keep pressures in check. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_033.jpg And revs down once the 6 speed goes in. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_043.jpg The SS manifold should be here from BEGI tomorrow. Now if the temperature would go up 10 degrees or so I'd get to turning wrenches. I played a bunch of games stalling the Maryland Emissions people with the turbo rabbit, so now as soon as we register a car we get the emissions test notice. So much for it being on a two year random cycle. In this case I don't mind; I can get the car turbo'd and have two years before its up for emissions again. More to come if anyone cares. Pat |
nice :)
|
oh em gee!
|
Nice Man. Very Nice.
But where is the turbo (I mean the real one with a big compressor wheel!) Mark |
nnice car, yeah i hear ya about the emissions. I'm currently fighting them..
|
One heck of a nice build.
Why does it look like your wastegate is going to be on top of your manifold, judging by your downpipe. |
I am sexually aroused right now.

not the R1!!!
i miss my track bike, damn expensive hobby. great lookin pile of gear youre building up.. |
Damn, thats a lot of shiny shit right thur.
|
wow, thats alot of expensive stuff. I wish I could afford that haha.
|
great stuff. good bit of kit you got there.

Nice setup. Seconding the curiosity on how the EWG mates up. |

That's on the drag car. SC61 at 32psi with a big old shot to spool it. We're presently working out the bugs with the Autronic after removing the SDS due to some funkyness controlling 1100 cc injectors. Hopefully moving away from a saturated injector will help with some drivability issues.

Looks like the DP is designed to work with a log mani with the wastegate on top. |
So far I got the clutch and transmission in. Definitely not the most fun but doable in a day. The six speed is a little weird how the shift pattern is laid out, but it seems to shift pretty well.
It's 20 degrees here right now so I did a test fit of the manifold/turbo/downpipe. Here's how it all sits. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata5_002.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata5_004.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata5_006.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata5_001.jpg The car passed emissions testing today so let the games begin. :bigtu: |
did you add the wastegate "balance" tube?
|
That's how I got it from Begi. The pic of the manifold above the last post is from Begi's site.

ok gotcha. i thought you were cool or something. |
that's pretty sexy stuff there... wish I had that kinda dough.
|
What's with the gigantor wastegate loop of doom arching up over the manifold?
Perhaps it's Corky's tribute to the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial? Seriously though, whats the low down on it? |
Looking at the manifold, there doesn't seem to be any other way to get exhaust from 3-4into the wastegate stream and maintain a reasonable wastegate placement.
As long as it works I don't care what it looks like. :) It'll be covered by the heatshield anyway. |
Wow. that balance tube looks crazy. haha.
Nice build so far though. Sorry to hear about your R1. |
Thanks man. I'm not sweating the R1 so much anymore. The traffic around here is getting so bad it was bound to happen at some point. I'm just glad I'm around and not in a wheelchair.
Now, should I install the Xede? I won't be slapping the turbo on for a couple of weeks until I can reserve some garage time. Is there any harm to installing the piggyback now to make sure everything is 100%? |
Nice build.. good to see someone else building up a nice setup. Keep us updated with pics. When you get it all finished come down to NOVA and dyno w/ the rest of us.
|
Am i the only person who is wondering why he is using a AFC to fuel the turbo? if you spent that much coin on such nice stuff why not go with a more robust solution?

Yeah, it's an AVC-R.

Generally a place in Sterling.. we will be going again in march.
|
:rly:OK but still MS pwns Apexi :rly:
|
for tuning we go to classic GT motorsports in Manassas, for power pulls, we'd go to ferrari's custom car and truck in sterling.
|
I'm in for dynoing.
I'm trying to resist the urge to pull the car into my carport and start turning wrenches. It's almost above freezing... I have today off waiting for a Direct TV installer. Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be pretty warm. |
killer setup.
|
What about the delaware dyno place?
|
Delaware is only good for no sales tax.. not dynoing! Real men dyno in VA. haha :)
|
I feel your pain on the bike man. Haven't been on the street in over a year, track only for me. Didn't have a wreck *that* bad, but I've had a couple in my time. Lost dozens of friends to those god damn things, and I've yet to know anyone get seriously hurt on a track. |

Xede and injectors are in. Intercooler and power steering cooler went in fine. Now I'm battling with the EGR nut. I'm going to give up for the night and get drunk.
|
anyone understand that purpose of the power steering cooler? does the fluid get hot enough to really justify it? what advantage does cooling the fluid provide? I just don't get it.
|
The only purpose is to get it out of the way for the IC. :)
Doesn't work any better or worse than stock. Stephanie |
MoCo Eh? Where Abootz?

Car's turbo'd. My hands are bloody and I have a huge knot over my eye.

Getting there. A few more hours and I'll be good.

That a pretty damn sexy looking downpipe setup. I was a bit skeptical from the first pics, but installed it looks pretty nice.

Hi, I'm new to this site and am local to the D.C. region folks (Ashburn, VA). I've finally decided I'll probably turbo my 1997 Miata. I'm not sure which route to go. I've autocrossed it for a few years (STS2) and decided to get something a bit quicker.
I just got off the phone w/ Corky Bell and enjoyed talking to him. The main question I've got is, what system is preferred in this area (NOVA) where they do OBDII emissions testing? I run a piggyback on my 04 WRX wagon (UTEC). I am wondering if the Xede will pass such testing. BTW, hope to meet some of you guys. I think I've met a few of you at some of the CDC autocrosses. -Ed O'Donnell saint_foo |
xede will pass odbII. one of the only good solutions that will.
you've probably seen me at a CDC event. or possibly will soon. |

you've probably seen me at a CDC event. or possibly will soon. Are you Matt (friends w/ Kyle Bowker)? I run the Montego Blue miata w/ usually 2 co-drivers.:) I'm one of the organizers. |
nope, scott, but friends with kyle. see miata in my sig. sorta.
|
OOOh, that's some mechanical porn right there. Subscribing because I have a GT28RS on the shelf, as well as an AVCR and a Tial 50, so I want to see how this all works out for you. Are you running the .86 or .64 hotside on the spud? And what exhaust is that?

C .86. I picked up the exhaust through BEGI, but it came from Enthuza. http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Miata3_037.jpg As an update, I have the car 95% buttoned up. I need some fittings for the WG, and a couple bolts and it should be drivable. Last night I got the AVC-R in, hooked up the wideband to the new exhaust, wired the EGT and a couple of miscellaneous things. One thing I forgot to do is fill up with 93 octane before tearing the car apart. I'm guess I'll drain the tank tonight and dump it in the wife's Gti. It's direct injection, it won't care:). One question: How long should it take the fans to cycle on once? I swapped the thermostat, so I realize it'll run a little cooler, but I haven't seen them pop on once. Granted, it is 50 degrees outside and I've only let the car run for under 10 minutes, but it has me worried a bit. |
It might take up to 20 minutes. They have to reach 207-210 to turn on so if you dropped it to a 180* thermostat that might take a while if it's just idling.
|
An update:
The car's been running pretty well although I'm still getting a boatload of boost creep up top. One of these days it's going to pop the motor running 14+ psi on the stock internals. Once that motor gives up I have a shorblock out of a 94 that I'm tearing down and will throw in rods, pistons, and a little crank work. The Exede is working well, and is relatively easy to tune. The stock map was pegging the wideband at 10.2 at full throttle. That's been tuned down to run light 11s all the way to redline. Here are some pics of the progress: http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Vacuum_004.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Vacuum_005.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Vacuum_006.jpg http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu...Vacuum_001.jpg Got a little too excited coming out of a corner and went agricultural: http://patrickschmidt.baked.net/albu.../Scoop_002.jpg Does anyone know of a local shop (MD) to do a 3.63 install? I just need them to do the guts; R&R of the diff is no problem. Anyone heard of the work Meathead raciing does? They seem to be big in the spec miata community. These 4.30s have got to go in a big way. |
Looks likes things are holding up well. Just because I'm lazy, are the fittings in the Tial WG and BOV 1/8 NPT? I think I can get hose and those fittings from work and I would much prefer that over rubber line.
What EBC solenoid is that as well? |
oooooooo... sex!
|
wow man...your build is teh secks.....much respect
