I am an old handle around m.net as HS99 and fairly new i guess on clubroadster as MotorManiac. My car is moderately modded and is setup for road courses.

I had nitrous for a year running a 75-100 shot

and then some dipSh%^ dropped an intake on the highway and i lost my oil and some bearings

So i have slapped my nitrous kit on my dad's Exige

and now i wants BOOST!


ok, enough smileys... I want something simple that someone mechanicly inclined (i am an electrical engineer and i do all my own work on my car) can install and I plan to learn how to tune it. To this end i am considering the $3k Flyin'Miata kit (190hp) I plan to order it early this week, leaving me the intervening month to learn more about turbo systems.

In the future i plan to just buy larger injectors and go megasquirt for fuel control but until then i will just be using the Voodoo card.


Any suggestions on what a turbo newb like me also needs to buy with that kit? (turbo timer, wide band, data logger, what not...?)

 

I would rather go with the BEGI kit, or DIY than the FM route. BEGI has better craftsmanship on their parts.

actually yes, yours was the first boosted miata i ever saw in person (we never get them at track events). i know i am being lame by buying a kit but i'm trying to minimize headache.

I would install the megasquirt first and get it controlling the fuel and the ignition, then get the turbo. I wish I would have done that from the beginning. As far as the turbo, I really would put together your own. Just ask questions and search through the old threads. I would definately get a mani and a turbo that are of the t3 footprint (leaves more options in the long run) I agree to source the mani and dp through begi. For a starter turbo, I would go for the t3 super 60. Seems that the turbo does extremely well.

 

this is a track car, so no little turbos I think getting the megasquirt running first sounds like a good idea to me, plus i can always cancel the electronics part of the kit and really save some money.

I have done alot of looking on the whole build a kit thing and even for people with some experience that can take 6 months or more and end up costing about the same for the 200hp mark if you do everything right and reliably. I need to have everything assembled so i can do it in one go (2-3 days of assembly) Can anyone give me a good reason to build my own kit other than its the cool thing to do? (not meant to insult) Will it be better than an off the shelf kit?

It all depends on how much thought you put into it. The reason that it takes people longer to put together is that people wait for good deals to come around. You can put together a very impressive turbo system if you choose the right components. That is going to be what makes or breaks the turbo kit. When do you want to spool? How much power do you want to make? I would go for the begi stuff though. From what I have seen, much better quality. Just my opinion. Corky is also a very helpful guy and will help you along your decision. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

 

It took me a few days of actual wrench time maybe 2 months of buying parts on my DIY, fixing leaks took most of my time up. Get some begi or other manifolds and run the turbo of your flavor. Get a MS/AEM or run a rrfpr what ever you like fwiw 200 whp turbo miata is alot faster than your jiuced miata, and alot easier to drive fast as well. trust me. The only people who seem to get stuck in sub 200 whp range are people who run basic greddys with no IC's WI or, timming/fuel control. GL look at cejernigan i am helping a buddy turbo his 94 currently it can be done for a decent price and make some very impressive power.

 

I'm pleased with the build quality of my bell kit...but have not installed it yet. You'll still have to do a few things like an oil cooler and coolant reroute to be painless on the track though from what I've seen locally.

I bought the bell kit because price wise, its close to a wash when you consider how complete the kit is. The garrett turbos are a big chunk of the price tag and things like the air scooper / rad cover, heat shields, and coolant parts made it worth-while for me considering I have very little time.
