I sold a 6 speed transmission to another member and was at a loss when it came to safely packaging it for shipping. I initially planned on buying a big rubbermaid type plastic tub and shipping in that. However, the largest tub I could find was too small, and also not strong enough. So, here's what I ended up doing in case someone else gets in a similar situation. Wood used included part of a 4x8 sheet of 23/32 subflooring and 4 8' 2x4s. About $30 plus $2 for a small box of screws. Sorry for the crappy iphone pics.

Shipping weight was 130#, and cost $126 insured for $600 to ship from IN to CT

Yeah, if I still worked at the distribution company I worked at a few years ago, it would have been less of a problem. However, my Civic can't fit a pallet in it, so I had to hone my woodworking skills.
