Spent some time with a trashed head today. Propane and an air hammer made short work of removing this thing.

18mm hole. So either use an 18mm freeze plug (Mellings MPC-204B, Dorman 565-102) or drill it and tap for M20x1.5 (18.5mm drill bit) Or M20x2? And not have to drill

Hole above it is M12x1.5 if you want to do anything weird with that

Taint size is just under 14mm

Hope this helps someone down the line. I'll update with how I plug mine.

I used a large hex set screw with a coating of jb weld in my build:

Any idea on thread size?

Thank goodness for gmail archives saving all my previous parts orders:

McMaster-Carr Alloy Steel Cup Point Socket Set Screw, 3/4"-16 Thread, 3/4" Length, packs of 5

IIRC it was a slightly undersized fit but the tap was a lot cheaper than the one that was a slightly better size (this was 5 years ago). I used the JB weld just to make sure it stayed in and didn't leak.

quick question: why would you want to remove that barb? Doesn't it feed water to the oil warmer sandwich plate + throttle body?

That is both the question and the answer.

aidandj 04-19-2017 09:44 AM

I don't have either of those. And the nipple is known to leak.

It's also very close in size to 1/2npt.

concealer404 04-19-2017 09:47 AM

And it makes reroutes awful.

well, mine doesn't leak, and on my setup the water line runs from the barb at the back of the head to the oil warmer, to the throttle body, and from there to the turbo. No problems with the coolant reroute either.

Cool.

That's not the case for everyone. My TB doesn't even have water ports. And my oil warmer doesn't either.

Guess this isn't a relevant thread for you.

Its known as the cursed nipple because if it leaks its damn near impossible to reach with the engine in the car. And if its never been replaced it could be about to blow

Eunos91 04-19-2017 11:46 AM

ahhhh, so you guys have a rubber cap on there which fails? So it's not the metal elbow itself that's leaking? Got it. I'm running brand new silicone hoses everywhere, so as you said I'm not concerned

aidandj 04-19-2017 11:51 AM

Some people have a cap. Some people have a hose. I don't want either.

aidandj 04-21-2017 07:21 PM

Both BP05 and BPVE are pictured in this thread
