I've seen a pic online of a diff housing that broke at that point after jacking the car up there.

It may only be certain diff housings though. I know my '99 3.90 torsen housing has it.

Just whipped out the 99-00 service manual...

.... I kinda hope they didn't put the breakaway points on the newer diffs or there's gonna be some smashed legs or something. :)

aw he's adorable!

Ahh ok cool. I guess the pic I saw was of some fluke thing. Before I saw that pic a long time ago, I always jacked my car up from the diff housing. Good to know I can probably go back to doing that.

looks very nice

Yeah, the diff ears are meant to breakaway in an accident, but I'd be incredibly skeptical if someone told me they broke them while jacking up on the car via the diff.

No, it happens. I bought a complete Torsen diff assembly out of a '95 M last year that came with one of the ears broken off right at the notch. So it does happen.

OTOH, I always jack up the rear of my car from the diff, both the original 1.6 and the new 1.8 (which now has wings out of a '97). Never heard of anybody breaking one this way.

Love the DP. Merging after the pipe is 3" is sweet.

Great job on the whole thing.

is a big 3" cat going to cause significant back pressure issues compared to no cat? I don't want to stuff the cat in once per year to get the car inspected, but why go with 3" if your cat is going to ruin it?

I hear the owner of that MSM is a really dork. :bigtu:

Oops. It's mine. :)

Not true. I drove a friend's V8 Miata a couple of weeks ago. 300+ hp without much tuning. Also drove a 270hp supercharged Miata that same day.

On the other hand: Tim and other local Miata club guys think I'm crazy, but this car with (approx. -- no dyno run yet) 200+ rwhp feels like all the power I'll need, after driving a mostly stock NA with barely 100rwhp for seven years.

For anyone who lives within a day or two drive from New Jersey, I highly recommend Tim's work (as if you couldn't tell) ... LOL, sorry about crushing your profit margin dude.

Oh, he also does a great Darth Vader impression.

I recently built another 3" stainless exhaust, this time for a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata. Similar to my exhaust, but with a smaller muffler (owner wanted his to be louder than my exhaust). Again, metal core cat, no resonator, magnaflow oval muffler. Lots straighter compared to the factory exhaust.

Sound clip can be had via this video. This is of the owner giving a ride to a member of a local miata club. The guy giggles a lot.

I also built a divorced wastegate downpipe for the same car. Flange is BEGI. The main pipe is 2.25" at the flange. After the first bend it transitions to 2.5", then transitions to 3" once beside the transmission and pointing in the correct direction. Then the 1.5" wastegate pipe merges into the main pipe. Nicest pipe I have made so far :)

Braineack 07-10-2017 08:14 AM

you bumped a 10 year old thread and couldn't even bother to spell your correctly?

TurboTim 07-10-2017 08:24 AM

Image links fixed in first post.

The last I heard, this downpipe cracked at some welds so the owner threw it away instead of having me fix/gusset it. Oh well.
