A few may be interested in updates on some fab work I've done recently:

I recently built another 3" stainless exhaust, this time for a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata. Similar to my exhaust, but with a smaller muffler (owner wanted his to be louder than my exhaust). Again, metal core cat, no resonator, magnaflow oval muffler. Lots straighter compared to the factory exhaust.





Sound clip can be had via this video. This is of the owner giving a ride to a member of a local miata club. The guy giggles a lot.



I also built a divorced wastegate downpipe for the same car. Flange is BEGI. The main pipe is 2.25" at the flange. After the first bend it transitions to 2.5", then transitions to 3" once beside the transmission and pointing in the correct direction. Then the 1.5" wastegate pipe merges into the main pipe. Nicest pipe I have made so far

Yeah, I'm on my 3rd set of frame rails. Actually I've never heard that. I'm sure my car has been on the lift 50 times since I've had it with no problems.

Actually, one corner was flattened when i bought the car. but the other 3 corners are fine. I guess my pads are wide enough to distribute the load?

On the other hand, I've seen more smooshed pinchwelds that I can remember.

I always lifted my current and previous miatae by the "frame rails" until I recently read somewhere on m.net that you're not supposed to.

Tim, awesome work man. If you don't mind sharing, what price range did you charge for that?

The exhaust and everything are amazing Tim, sound is great too. The driver and his buddy though clearly do not understand what a miata that can break tread in like first through 3rd feels like.

I lift by the rear diff assembly (mostly because my car is too low for any other jack point) then I stick my jackstands under the K members. After a brief look at the framerails on the miata I got a little sketched.

I have smooshed frame rails AND pinch welds. I jack by cross member and diff right after pre-jacking with the OEM tire changer jack so I can get the jack under. oh well.

Nice work though. I gotta put my metal cat in some day.

Thanks. Yeah, most people in that club are wine-n-cheeser's and have no clue. K&N panel filters and cat back exhausts are bigtime go fast bits.

I have heard and seen pics of broken diff housings after jacking the car from the diff. One (or both?) of the "ears" on the diff housing are machined with slices/cuts that are designed to break in an accident. I've seen a pic online of a diff housing that broke at that point after jacking the car up there.

It may only be certain diff housings though. I know my '99 3.90 torsen housing has it.

Mine are bent. I use a block of wood to try and distribute the load.

Well, the guy got a KILLER deal on the entire exhaust, a few hundred less than a BEGI stainless-split pipe and Enthuza 3" exhaust would have cost after shipping and average installation costs. I felt bad and lowered my price because it caused bad boost creep (typical of exhausts on the MSM), but wound up fixing the mysterious MSM boost creep later that day, after already telling him the price. Oh well. After all expenses and two guys working all weekend, I made $154 on that deal. hahaha. I mainly wanted to do the downpipe because I've never done a divorced wastegate style before. And no one makes a 3" DP for the MSM

I told others that I'd redo my exhaust for around $450 installed (without cat and resonator), but it'd require the car to be dropped off one weekend for an entire day. I don't currently have any jigs or stuff like that, but if there were interest (more than a few people who weren't close by) I'd do it.

could always go to www.mazda-speed.com forum and show it. Might get some sales, but a lot of them there dont seem to want to try out of the box ideas
