Question about a 1.8 swap.
im not sure if this is the right place to post this but, i found a 2002 miata wrecked in the back and hes selling it cheap. the motor, drive shaft, and diff. are all in good shape.
i have a 1991 miata, exactly how much work and what extra parts would i need to swap the 2002 1.8 ( engine, breaks, and rear-end ) into my 1.6 car? thanks for all the input, it will all help in some way. |
All bolt in stuff.
You'll need the swap kit from Flyin' Miata for the motor...has some adapter brackets and such...under $200. There are write-ups on the brake and diff swaps as well. |
The 2002 has VVT. Is there a way to control that in a 1991 now, without having to rewire for the 2002 ECU?

thats what iv read so far and it says.. "The 2001-05 heads also have Variable Valve Timing, which is a problem unless you have an aftermarket ECU like the Hydra Nemesis to control it. " |
Take the diff/axles/driveshaft/brakes and sell everything else. If you want a 1.8L you can pick up a used 94-97 for $350 or a 99-00 for $900 with the better flowing head. If you are staying NA, just get a 94-97. Both of those engines will work with your current setup without the need for an aftermarket ecu.

Obviously you will not be running with optimal fuel & timing curves if you use a 1.6 ECU on an '01+ motor. Probably not a massive difference, though a few HP are being left on the table. The NB alternator is also a problem, as it's controlled by the ECU. You can't just install the 1.6 alternator directly, as the pulley is different (V-belt vs. ribbed belt) though I've heard folks mention swapping pulleys. Never tried it, no idea if it works. If you can find a '94-'97 alternator, that'll bolt right in with no hassle at all. Though in the end, I have to agree w/ rharris. Unless your 1.6 motor is dead or dying, sell the NB motor and use the money to turbo what you've got. Much better ROI. |
Agree with what Mr. Perez said, I would only add that in any event, if considering an entire driveline swap and the undertaking of a massive project, stripping out the wiring harness, etc. Is likely a better solution in every possible way than hacking together pieces from several years of Miatae.
