ok so i bought me an NB miata
I plan on puttinng the head of the nb engine on the 94-97 block to have the outlets ready for the turbo.
Question is, which headgasket (na or nb) to use? or does it not matter?

Depends on what year NA and NB. The pre-vvt 1.8L BP all had the same headgasket (i believe). The vvt ones were re-designed to change the coolant flow.

:-\ I don't like to jump on the hate wagon, but I find it odd that you had trouble setting the timing of your car, but you just bought a whole 'nother car with the idea of pulling just the head off of it to put on a different car.. but you're not sure what headgasket you need. I would think swapping heads is something that requires a fair bit of technical knowledge in order to complete successfully, and "which head gasket" is probably fairly low on that list of knowledge needed.

the thing with automobiles and mechanics is that... anybody can do it, you just need to know how.
I happen to be very fortunate and have ressources around me that allow me to learn the skills and find the information I need to do the tasks.
Now as for specific jobs like the timing belt and the head swap, I figured I'd ask you guys since I thought the miata community was nice and knowledgeable, but I've been proven wrong, but then again... this is a forum and is not representative of all the real people out there who just want to enjoy their Miata and talk about them.
Back to the subject,
doing the head swap isn't that big of a deal, I have a longblock 94-97 just waiting in the shop, we have all the tools we need to do any job, all I need is the information, which I am slowly collecting (and isnt that complicated) this week to hopefully get it done next weekend.
As for the timing belt job, I KNOW how to do one, but I just wanted to know tricks from people that have done them in the past ON MIATAS, and know how to save time/energy. But that is just me, you're free to interpret my questions however you like, this is a free country.

And luckily for me, to go back to the gasket,
like the nice mister before me said, the 94-00 gaskets are the same. I have a 95 engine and and 99 engine so problem is solved,. I bought the headgasket today along with the intake gasket and throttle body gasket. Still waiting on the waterpump but we'll get it, and when we do, I'm pulling the engine and doing the swap (and the timing belt) :)

As for your lack of confidence iin our skills, I understand. I lack confidence in your skills too and that's something all mechanics do. deflate that ego and share the love.

and btw, we're building TWO separate cars, his in an NA , mine is the NB. I have an NA block which i'll use with my NB head, and his will just be a straight up replacement.

If you're doing all the work, I would spend a few bucks and go vvt. If my engine ever goes boom, or I need a new head for any reason, I can't see myself putting a non vvt head in--especially in an nb.

Thing is, althought we have a very good budget, the engine's that we have now are the engines that we're gonna use and there's not gonna be anymore money thrown in there. There's still a lot to be done and if there is money left over, we'll see what options we've got. But I don't think VVT is a good option financially for us at the moment. Especially if I do mine like that, he'll want his the same... twice the money
