Quick/getto water temp set up

So i wasn't planning on hitting the track anytime soon but now i'm going this saterday and it will be the hottest day sense my supercharger install and i have yet to get a real temp gauge so off to the hard ware store.

want to get some feed back before i try and install.

Goal is a better then stock temp gauge for cheap. $14 gauge for orielly's and $5 in plumbing parts. i plan on cutting the exit heater core hose (thanks machismo) and installing a brass t fitting with a peace of copper wire band clapped to the fitting to run to a ground.

anyone see an issue?

I would put some jb weld, teflon tape or something on those threads to ensure they wont leak.

Have fun at the track!

i have hi psi teflon tape read =D

also any one have any ideas on mounting the gauge without permit damage to my dash? was thinking about lots of black car duct tape :noob:

I assume the green wire is to somehow ground the body of the sensor. Those things usually get their return path through the engine, but since it's just floating on a couple of rubber hoses, you'll need to make sure it's grounded.

green wire is for grounding, will stip it and jb weld it to keep it connected and the gauge has it's own ground wire also.

I had mine like that for a long time. Worked perfectly.

My setup is different , but might be worth a thought...

Lowes. Home depot, Iron Pipe. 1 inch diameter.

four inch section. no threads on ends, de burred, just cleaned up.

Drilled and tapped iron pipe specifically for that sensor. 5/8ths if i remember correctly.

Screwed in fitting.

Cut upper radiator hose toook out 1 inch in the middle for the sensor to have room. Installed new hose clamps on both ends.

Wired, and then had to gound the iron pipe too to give proper readings.

WORKS GREAT

just my setup.

Goodluck

i was going to do that but sense this is a temp fix and oem heater hose is cheaper to replace then a silicon water hose....

jeff:

since

saturday

carry on!

pretty much how i have my oil temp sender on my oil feed for my turbo. had to ground the sensor in a similar fashion.

How is an electrical gauge an upgrade? Get a mechanical gauge and do it right.

...And you won't have to screw with a ghetto ground wire setup.

...And your temperature reading won't be different every time you change the load on your electrical charging system.

My :2cents:.

less dumber then the stock dumbly gauge is my thought and even with the power load it will give me a better approximation of what my true water temp is.

minus whale get enough sense to just lettuce give you advise for pizza mind. I'm still on the fents over weather my stock gage is informative enough.

I already haz an omori gauge though, just need to put it in.

Any difference in preferred location for temp readings?

I'm referring to the 2 options above: Upper rad vs Heater

I was under the impression the heater hoses showed a better representation of where the coolant is hottest

logic would say the water leaving the block would be the best place to read your true water temp. but what do i know about logic?

y8s 06-17-2009 07:46 PM

this thread inspired me to address my shared water temp sensor by installing a heater hose sensor. It's apparently very hard to find a 5/8 inline tee with a 3/8 bung in it. Autometer sells one but it's 30 bucks. So I got that after pricing out the equivalent hack version.

lots of places sell 1/8 bung versions or 1/2 hose versions for way cheaper but obviously that's not so useful.

also i used different fittings. the ones i had where to small. went with a 1/2 male to 1/2 male screw peace and then calmed the hose on to that
