Racing Stripes?

It's something I've noticed that is not talked about much here, I know a few members have them, but just out of curiousity what's the general consensus of racing stripes on a Miata?

While I've been looking for another NA I've noticed quite a few for sale with them, either vinyl or painted on. Some look good and some don't, mainly due to color. I've even considered a couple of them. I envision it with Tuckin99 replica flares, wheels and tires to fill the flares, and either a turbo or V8 under the hood, seems to work out ok in my head. I've always thought they looked right at home on a Shelby Cobra, but never really known what to think about them on a Miata.

What say you?

Just for reference, here's one for sale on m.net and the second is a picture I took this past weekend (which shows my Miata vs. Cobra example well):

Not a fan...

gospeed81 03-01-2010 04:11 PM

I've considered it, but always wanted something subtle like Trent's. Mine's black, so I've thought some shade of grey/graphite.

Can be cool. Have you checked out the feztastic stripe gallery? Lots of no-no there to decide to avoid.

Black with dark grey/graphite/"ghost" looks good on many cars.

Where is that gallery?

mgeoffriau 03-01-2010 04:18 PM

I'm tempted by some silver double stripes. Too many red Miata's running around. Not sure how it would look with black wheels and a tan top, though.

greeenteeee 03-01-2010 04:21 PM

i ve seen one locally, simple, hard top w/ matching color, with a single stripe off centered maybe 4-5 inches in width?

looks clean, and i never like miata's w/o front lips til thhis one.

buffon01 03-01-2010 04:28 PM

I want black stripes on mine :)

cueball1 03-01-2010 04:51 PM

Depends entirely on the color combination, quality of work, overall look of the car and that sense of rightness that can't be quantified. Some are fugly, some look great. There isn't always a way to point to exactly to what made the difference.

y8s 03-01-2010 04:54 PM

I faked it.

Considering doing it when the Titanium is put down, just ghosting a slightly darker shade of silver. My paint guy already gave me grief about the color change, why not go all out?

Rafa 03-01-2010 05:15 PM

Y8s, that looks awesome!

Eric; you bought a new Miata?

Quoted for truth. Many striped Miatas don't do it right and end up looking stupid. But if they're done right they're fuckin awesome.

buffon01 03-01-2010 09:55 PM

I saw that process and lamented it.

Are you going to go the V8 route next time?

Doppelgänger 03-02-2010 08:19 AM

Hey Artie.... those SSRs look too big for your NA.. I think it would be best if you sold them to me.

:giggle:

LOL. Yes, those are 17's in that first pic. Those were replaced with 15's. Yoram bought my 17 and 16 inch SSR's. Now I'm just left with the 15's. Contact him. I'm not sure if he's using them on his lotuses or not.

Doppelgänger 03-02-2010 08:25 AM

I'll admit, I've always had a soft spot for some combos...

White w/green stripes..

http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/atta...eenstripes.jpg

and there is a local guy with a older Viper GTS that is red with charcoal stripes that looks b-a.

Yeah, was a sad sight in my driveway too. V8 is the current plan, it'll probably be a little bit before it happens though.

I'd like to see that. Red with black looks like crap on a Miata (IMO), red with white is bland, I like the red with silver, but not sure how it would look with black wheels. Dark grey/charcoal stripes might do the trick, however.

-Banks- 03-02-2010 10:05 AM

id rock stripes if i had the RB typeII nose. and way better black paint. they'd be deep deep red.

Don't mind the ill-fitting hood. I was talking to the owner at Road Atlanta and he said it's had something to do with the aftermarket carbon piece that was made for him. Personally, that wouldn't fly with me... but the car is far from stock and would put a complete asswalking on anything on this forum..and he was a cool guy.

mgeoffriau 03-02-2010 10:24 AM

Hood risers? Just kidding. Thanks for the pic.

That is sick, and those colors work well on that car. Maybe I'll try changing the wheel color to black to see how that looks.

RotorNutFD3S 03-02-2010 10:45 AM

Mike, it's really bad that you found those pictures before I did, I took those shots and couldn't find the folder they were in.

gospeed81 03-02-2010 10:55 AM

I like revlimiter's stripes (skinny-fat-skinny centered), and also dig the offset skinny-fat stripes.

ive been considering charcoal strips on my evo gold nb to go with my rays, not sure how wide how far apart or if it will look ghay or attract too much attention

This is the main thing I worry about when I consider stripes.

I already get too much attention from the 5-0, and am trying to tone down my car. Just put on a 22" magnaflow instead of my 14" dynomax to try and be less ricer.

Stripes do scream "yes I was misbehaving"

OH STOP IT!!! :riaa:

That's actually from an autox day. BMW club.

cueball1 03-02-2010 04:18 PM

I think it's cute you all have the exact same stripes! Now you need matching helmets plus MT "turbo's and kitties are awesome" tshirts for the next track day.

Of course I get to mock you guys all dressing your cars up the same. You get to mock my pathetic lack of HP and fabrication skills.

mgeoffriau 03-02-2010 04:24 PM

Actually, we should just probably all get rainbow stripes. Like that Camaro show car.

15 15 tie breaker! NAY.

Steiny 03-02-2010 10:48 PM

I agree that it depends on the color choices.

My miata is yellow with black racing stripes that would look good, but doesnt, because they look like who ever did them used industrial sized electrical tape and didnt have enough to do one complete stripe at a time

Oh shit you still here?? :giggle: .... Pics of your ride

ThatGuy85 03-03-2010 11:17 AM

Not really a fan of them. There are certain cars they work on, others they don't. Miata is one of those that it looks strange IMO.

Newbsauce 03-03-2010 11:32 AM

I don't have stripes anymore, but I liked them while I had them. These were dark silver with a light silver border.

Sorry to re-deadlock, but I just don't really dig on stripes :/.

Fireindc 03-03-2010 05:50 PM

I think with the red color you could pull of some dark gunmetal grey stripes, or something of the sort. Red/white is WAY overplayed.

So YES and NO imo.

chicksdigmiatas 03-03-2010 06:27 PM

I thought for a while that flat black stripes on my car would be cool, but then i woke up and decided....nay.

I too find a less obvious stripe more appealing. Flat black on black, black on a charcoal car, charcoal stripe on a black car and that y8's chrome looking stripe on black is sexy.

Pretty damn even split on the poll so far.

I'm generally not a fan of striped Miatas. However, the PO of my car had these painted on, and, while I find them too narrow, they go well with the top & interior...so all good.

Mobius 03-03-2010 07:37 PM

Totally depends on the miata, and on the stripe(s), and on the quality of execution.

When I was looking for a miata, there was one here in Oregon that was very sekseh. I am not sure what model it was. I believe it was a 2004, and it had a dark blue cloth interior and top. Might have been a Shinsen. It had asymmetrical racing stripes - a 3/4" wide one down the left body, and the right front fender had a diagonal double 3/4" wide stripe. Difficult to describe and difficult to picture, but it was very well done. I didn't get it because it had a 5 speed, no LSD, and didn't have a hardtop. Also, it had heavy snowflake wheels. They looked good, but were heavy.

i have contemplated the stripes myself, i like the car from spain on the feztastic site the first one. with the stripe under the door..really looks subtle yet bold..i kinda have a lil one under mine. i did my step up under my door with that bedliner stuff...jus might have another project

As a noob, I've posted up a few pic's of my car with stripes when I introduced my self, so I'm a fan of them if done right.:)
