Yeah.. any external cues? Because crawling under old *** rx7's in the junk yard is creepy when you see black widow webs all over the place

Besides the LSD additive tag on the drain bolt, I don't think there's any way to tell by looking at the outside of the diff. itself.

You could always go to an RX-7 forum and find out what models came stock with the limited slip and try to match up other external clues from the rest of the car. Or you could get the VIN # and call up Mazda from the junkyard and ask if the car came equipped with an LSD.

Good answer.

When I was shopping for my Torsen, I did exactly this. On the car that I finally decided to pillage, Mazda couldn't say specifically that it has a LSD in it, but they did confirm it to have A1Q "Merlot Mica" paint (making it a '95 M-edition) and a 5-speed gearbox. Those two pieces of information together meant it had an LSD.

You've seen the NA Features Table I assume, which shows all the different factory equipment combinations for all Miatas. I would assume that if you search around, something similar exists for the RX7. Using this chart, for instance, you can determine that any '96 which has power mirrors and a manual gearbox has a Torsen, although a '96 without power mirrors will most likely have a Torsen if it has R-package suspension and bodywork. Etc...
