hustler 11-14-2007 08:35 PM

not much longer than the search function takes to give you an enormous amount of info.

Braineack 11-14-2007 08:36 PM

you could jsut swap them over....i believe arkmage did that with his.

how much power are you running, i ran my 1.6L with 170-200rwhp for about two years.

Eunos_roadsterna6ce 11-14-2007 08:39 PM

WOW....brainneck you ran yours for two years!!! thats amazing!!!! hehehe...i don't know how much power i'm producing...i guess i can trick my girlfriend swaping it with me...hehehe...

Braineack 11-14-2007 08:46 PM

I didn't abuse it. But did a bunch of autoxs and two track days. Others have lasted as well, but one day.......

firedog25 11-14-2007 08:52 PM

my old stock viscous unit is still intact and I'm not the nicest person to it. I have a torsen set up waiting to be installed though.

its the ring that goes on the 6" rears, not the diff.

I have an open 4.30 swap for sale if you're interested.

my 1.6L vicious has lsted a month or more of pretty good abuse at 150 hp.. still holding up! *knock on wood*

I swapped rear ends between my 97 and my 90. I have been running the 1.6 rear on my 97 for a year and a half. My 90 is turboed with an rx7 clutch type lsd and the 97 w/ 1.6 rear is open differential. So yes it can be swapped. My main hangup was getting the axles out of the hubs. My solution was to swap the entire axle/hub assembly.

Braineack 11-15-2007 09:05 AM

that;s right, you were the one, not arkmage....close....I do remember the image of your handy BFH.

rotaryjunky 11-15-2007 03:07 PM

91 with lsd, I put 40+ eighth mile launches on mine just this last summer. I'm hoping to get a 97 parts car soon to swap, but so far so good. I've checked the fluid and no metal yet. But the car has only 33K on it.

By the time you see metal it's too late.

I went through 2 within 5 years of daily driving, autocross, and track rat duty. That car was at stock 1.6 power.

It all depends on how you drive it. If you don't drag, drift, clutch-dump, or do smoky burnouts at every stoplight, it will probably last a long time. The grip of your tires have a lot to do with the stress placed on the dif... so the stickier the worse it is. I've got 10k miles on mine w/no issues wearing 195/55 15's. A good fluid goes a long way, so swap to something with a reputation. Swapping out with a 1.8 car is dumb considering I've seen full open 1.8 swaps go for $300. If you swap them over, you've got to do it twice. Just buy yourself one and see if you can't resell your stock to make up some cash. Somebody will buy it.

I put 10k miles on my 1.6 rear with the turbo, 2k or so at 250+ whp. But I was very cautious with it. The R&P seems to be in proper order still, but the VLSD doesn't lock up so well anymore. Not that it locked up so great new (20%?). Apparently I was running Royal Purple in it, I found out when I pulled the plug to drain it after the swap. But the fluid looked really good, so I left it.

If I were you, Mr "Miata DriFter" :gtfo:, I would go ahead and swap to a 1.8 diff before yours breaks.

No to the ring gear going or his sale pitch?

firedog25 11-15-2007 05:44 PM

No all around. No need.

jayc72 11-15-2007 05:47 PM

So let me get this straight, you want to swap your girlfriend's rear end? We'll need to at least see pictures, prefer nudes but underware will do in a pinch.

Ben 11-15-2007 05:47 PM

Nice attitude. Your diff will eventually fail. Just hope it doesn't happen while cruising at 85 mph on a 12 lane interstate, suddenly locking your rear axle up (happened to a guy I know with an Aerodyne)
