replace wheel bearing?

My wheel bearing howls very rarely (sometimes weeks apart) when turning. There is no play in the bearing when I tug on the wheel though. Would you still replace it before you hit the track? I know the answer is yes for safety.

There is no fucking play though, and that should be the indicator of bearing damage.

then lube it up and drive it till it goes out i doubt you could break it while NA.

bripab007 07-16-2007 12:28 PM

So you hands/arms/eyes can discern there's no play whatsoever when you tug on the wheel?

Try using a dial indicator on the hub and get back with us ;)

Couldn't it also be a powersterring pump, since I'm turning at idle?

If it were the powersteering, wouldn't it only make the noise when I initally turn the wheel, not the entire course of the turn?

It makes no noise at speed.

neogenesis2004 07-16-2007 01:15 PM

maybe you just cant hear it at speed. I cant hear my phone ringer at max volume when driving down the road.

miatamania 07-16-2007 01:20 PM

I can hear my rear end noise over my exhaust going down the road...I bet that would make you curl up into a corner and cry...

just makes me wonder what is making noise :)

1st-5th were spur gears in my vw...that wasn't quiet. I hope I've diagnosed it correctly...and not wasted $200 on hubs.

it's probably the pressure relief on the PS pump getting nasty... when was the last time you flushed the PS system?

I generally don't worry about wheel bearings until they start sounding like death while going straight and/or there is excessive play in the wheel.
