My wheel bearing howls very rarely (sometimes weeks apart) when turning. There is no play in the bearing when I tug on the wheel though. Would you still replace it before you hit the track? I know the answer is yes for safety.

If it were the powersteering, wouldn't it only make the noise when I initally turn the wheel, not the entire course of the turn?
It makes no noise at speed.

I can hear my rear end noise over my exhaust going down the road...I bet that would make you curl up into a corner and cry...
just makes me wonder what is making noise

1st-5th were spur gears in my vw...that wasn't quiet. I hope I've diagnosed it correctly...and not wasted $200 on hubs.
it's probably the pressure relief on the PS pump getting nasty... when was the last time you flushed the PS system?
I generally don't worry about wheel bearings until they start sounding like death while going straight and/or there is excessive play in the wheel.
