Rewiring power windows to always work
How do I make the power windows work even if the car is off?
Googling isnt turning up any positive results. |
make sure they have a constant +12v source instead of the switched one?
|
This is something I've ALWAYS wanted to do. AbeFM did it. Like Oscar said, find the wire that's switched 12V and run it to fused 12V that's always on.
|
if you pull the switch and probe the harness, you want to find the wire that is +12 when the car is on and not +12 when teh car is off. be sure it's not one of the window outputs, but I think those will always be unpowered unless you move the switch up or down.
|
question: why do you guys want to do that?
|
Replace the relays while you are at it. Writeup on m.net, makes them work 1000% better/faster.

Anyone have a link? |

But my windows speed is fine. I guess ill track down where the power windows power comes from and swap it to a constant 12 volt.

My drivers side window moves slower than mike's car. :giggle: I seriously gotta figure out what's wrong with it one day.

Googling isnt turning up any positive results. IMO, a dumb ass idea in most cars, but probably not too much of an extra security risk in the miata so do if if you feel like it. My dad had a classic benz that had what appeared to be 5 power window switches on the driver's door. The 5th switch was actually a toggle that allowed any of the 4 window switches to function with the ignition off if the toggle was depressed with the window switch. Pretty neat. |

Like I said and the link states, the relays provide more juice to the motors, making the windows work better x100. My last miata it took about 15 miutes for the window to raise back up on a well greased track.

if it's anything like the NA, it's directly powered form the ignition switch.

Another improvement would be to clean and regrease the window rails. This mod is cheap. Pull the windows out and the rails, clean the rails thoroughly and regrease with with an all purpose grease.
I did this to my red '96 over a year ago and it was a HUGE improvement. This was on manual windows, as well. I can imagine how much better the power windows would roll up. |

who said you couldn't? sounds like the solution....especially since it seems nothing else is driven after the power window fuse, so only the switch will stay active, and nothing else will be affected.
|
Eggsellent.
I will try this when I get home. |
Back to the drawing board. The ABS fuse is under the hood, the power window fuse is under the console in the cabin.
Ill have to source it somewhere under there. What would you guys says is the min gauge wire I should safely run for this? |
