No. Thats not good.

Where did you buy it from?

Handsome Greg 01-14-2014 09:39 PM

looks like a hole/void in the casting? can you pressurize the oil/water circuits to see if it's communicating to either?

carnut169 01-14-2014 09:47 PM

Got it from a member here.

More I think about it more pissed I am. Not visible in add pics and not in the description. It took me a second to see the hole... no way the seller didn't see it. Also not described were the repairs to the header but they seem to be well done. I'm requesting a refund.

If it only connects to the oil drain bolt hole and none of the fluid passages it could be ok...

Evergreen 01-14-2014 10:44 PM

I just received your email about this. Honestly I never even saw that. I never installed this kit. I opened the box when I got it and put it away in the garage. I have since decided to go bigger so I sold the kit. I am very sorry about this. I am just as surprised and pissed about this as well being I bought this from a member on here too. Who never said anything about it either.

Have you pressurized it at all to see what happens?

This is who I bought it from biohzrd53188. https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-par...rything-74728/

It looks like it just goes to the bolt for the bolt on oil drain flange and doesnt see fluid.

Also the manifold was repaired by the guy I got it from. Very good fabricator and it was a hairline crack that appeared on the runner and downpipe after about 2-3 years of use. he repaired it properly and didn't cut any corners. He disclosed the repair to me and I disclosed it to the guy that got it from me, obviously he didn't disclose it to the next guy, and likewise with the next guy after that. Then it was sold to you, probably undisclosed too.

Tubular manifolds crack. Its not a matter of if, its a matter of when. Even high quality ones from absurdflow and artech.

Hope that helps.

Does this help?

Pressure test it...if it fails, maybe garrett would replace it?

Totally normal on the 2860. Mine has the exact same hole in it. It is a void that is opened when they drilled tapped a bolt hole. Does not go INTO the turbo housing or oil/coolant area at all.

Don't worry about it, I freaked out about it until I studied it closer and saw that it has no relation to the internals of the turbo.

Well after a couple of weeks the buyer escalated this to a claim with paypal. He has been informed that this turbo is functional. I even pulled another 2860 out of storage and it too has the same casting spot.

This is my other turbo.

carnut169 02-03-2014 08:17 AM

Yes, 3 reasons. I had someone look at the turbo who knows way more that I. He was not overly concerned with the casting/ tapping void/ error, and basically stated what others above have said- it should not be an issue. However, he also said that the shaft has way too much play in/out- that it should have almost none. This one moves roughly 2mm and needs to be rebuilt.
So...
1. Undisclosed casting error.
2. Undisclosed manifold repairs.
3. Undisclosed rebuild required.

It's a train wreck. Why not just allow me to return it? I have not used it and I'm not a satisfied buyer. Shouldn't have to involve Paypal IMHO. I also offered to keep the system if Evergreen paid for the rebuild by refunding $500.
Do I want to go spend double and buy an FM no electronics kit? No. Also been trudging along buying things assuming this would work- things like the IC kit, an external WG, etc.

$500 to rebuild a 2860? Wut?

Jeffbucc 02-03-2014 08:41 AM

Seems about right depending on the damage for a dual ball bearing turbo. I've seen anywhere from $200-600

concealer404 02-03-2014 08:43 AM

Oh right, fancy turbos, my bad.

I usually do mine for $50 on my kitchen table in 2 hours. Or if i'm feeling lazy, i just buy another one.
