I hear a turbo really quiets a car down.

concealer404 07-24-2018 05:17 PM

Yeah yeah. Not interested. Have a likecat anyways.

vteckiller2000 07-24-2018 05:23 PM

The resonator in the cobalt mid is much shorter than the racing beat also.

1) too awesome
2) too good sounding
3) too fast
4) too much logic
5) not enough pain, suffering, torquelessness, loudness

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Yes
4) No
5) It's additional pain and suffering to fix a torquelessness that i don't experience, but yeah. Might make it quiet. Maybe. The MSM droned nearly this bad as well, though. I can remind you if you'd like that that car had a turbo. As did two other Miatas that i've owned. I've had more turbo Miatas than n/a Miatas. One could say that i'm making informed decisions.

Nah, it's not really raspy. And it's changed in tone/vol since the first start. In the higher rpms, it takes on a note akin to a brass instrument, but it's much more mellow in the lower rpms. It's hard to record it right, because the microphone tries to compensate for the change in volume. It probably gives enough volume at full throttle to get someone's attention, but hushes on decel. Definitely a plus when you see a cop, and need to slow down. lol

Speaking of the MSM, that stock exhaust is actually really good. My buddy has an MSM exhaust on his NA and probably it would fit the bill for you.

Sounds like wet farts on an n/a car.

Dude, you a picky AF. lol.

concealer404 07-25-2018 11:16 AM

Well yeah. I spent a huge amount of money on this car in an attempt to get exactly what i want. I don't want the car to sound like wet farts, so it's not going to sound like wet farts.

I've heard MSM muffler on an n/a NB. Sounds bad.

Padlock 07-25-2018 11:35 AM

heres how you get rid of wet fart noises... remove the BP

That would involve getting rid of the car. Not interested. The point of this was to build the best NB commuter i could using off the shelf parts. If i can't do that, then i don't want it. Full stop.

The car sounds GREAT right now. Easily the best sounding n/a BP i've ever heard, outside of race car stuff like Madjack's.

cabowabo 07-25-2018 12:52 PM

I run the same setup more or less and can't imagine it being loud. BP4W with NA (b/c 97) RB header, resonated mid-pipe, and muffler with enthuza OBD-II cat. With RB test pipe it's much louder/rapsier, but with cat it's smooth and pretty quiet. At speed the loudest noise for me is just that general loudness in the cabin being transmitted from the trunk. If I measure decibels that +wind/road noise is what will be picked up, not exhaust drone.

concealer404 07-25-2018 12:53 PM

Is it the RB resonated pipe or a different one? Where is the cat located?

Yes, RB header/mid-pipe/muffler. Cat is between header/midpipe because NA exhaust. Swapping to test pipe significantly increases loudness/drone/raspiness.

concealer404 07-25-2018 12:59 PM

Hrm ok. So your midpipe resonator is likely shorter/smaller than mine because NA. I'd expect your setup to be SLIGHTLY quieter but not crazy. Wtffffffffffff.

RB offered to sell me another muffler on the cheap. Vteckiller suggested i buy a borescope and take a peek inside this muffler.

To be fair I also have poly diff mounts and 4.78's, so at this point that's adding to my medley of cruise/highway noises. I also worked in ship engine rooms in my 20's, so my hearing took some hits back then and might be dampening the same noise that drives you mad. Even before the diff changes I've just never really had a problem with this exhaust though. Been running it since 2012. The general bass that's produced at speed does drive me a bit crazy, but I don't attribute it to exhaust drone/noise.

concealer404 07-25-2018 01:16 PM

Some of it is frequency, but the outright volume level being exactly the same as my other car tells me that it's more than just that. I can't hear a single bit of road or wind noise over the drone. I run a 6spd/4.30 combo so i'd imagine we're in the same ballpark for highway RPMs.

huesmann 07-25-2018 03:00 PM

TBH vintagerust's car sounds like it'd be more annoying to me than yours, at least based on those two videos. If it turns out your stock muffler can no longer connect at the axle flange, can you borrow one from a friend to try out?

Yeah like i said... it's very quiet outside the car and sounds great. It's pretty bass-y and rattles the house a little due to frequency if it's in the driveway idling, but quite quickly goes to not being able to hear it at all by the time my wife gets into 2nd gear going to work.

I don't really know anyone with a stock miata.

I did remember that i have another thing to try that would be fairly annoying as i continue to burn through these stupid single use gaskets. I have a huge muffler'd rear section for the exhaust on the other car. Could try the resonated midpipe from the other car with the huge muffler and see what happens. Fitment isn't near as nice on that setup but might get me some data.

Gonna mess with a $20 scope first though. Sick of putting Miatas on jack stands at the moment.
