Jesus mother. I dont think I could have brought my self to buy that because I would have to put more time into it de-fucking everything about it than it would take me to just make a locust frame myself. Those control arms are weak enough to break with the wimpy tires on it now, if they dont rip off the chassis first.

The fast/cheap/easy way to make that car decently safe would be to grind off all the suspension tabs and replace them with better tabs designed to take stock control arms.

And I would put serious consideration into at least adding some sort of down tube to the front from the roll bar and 1 nascar bar/side.

Ok VA residents.... What does it need to pass inspection? Windshield? It obviously has no Vin tag... Just install the one fron the donor car?

..... All the questions...

You're seriously going to try to register it!?

Headlights need to be aimed properly.
Tail lights/turn signals need to be functional and pass regs
Needs a windshield made of safety glass (no lexan)
Must have wipers
No exhaust leaks
License plate must be illuminated
Seat belts must be DOT approved

That's the lite version, and totally skips anything emissions related (which might be an issue depending on how they classify it). Don't even try.

miata2fast 03-27-2013 09:40 AM

looks like it needs another 100hp. Make it happen.

BTMiata 03-27-2013 09:58 AM

A crusher is what it needs... That's dangerous

Efini~FC3S 03-27-2013 10:14 AM

amazing

awesome

looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you...

Erat 03-27-2013 10:52 AM

It also has no front or rear anti roll bars... What the frig?

DaveC 03-27-2013 12:40 PM

Looks like there's room for a big block Chevy motor!

Looks like the builder ran out of purple paint before doing the bottoms of a couple of the control arms.

If unregisterable isn't a word, it should be.

As bad as it is, it isn't the worst Ive seen. I saw a homebuilt kit airplane built by someone with very similar skills at the local grass strip once. It had not yet flown and the owner was in the process of enlisting someone to certify its airworthyness and to solo in it(builder had no pilot's license). Before that occurred, someone contacted the kit manufacturer who promptly filed an injunction or got a cease and desist letter or something to halt his activities before anyone got killed. He had used hardware store bolts instead of aircraft grade fasteners as well.

That plane and this car would probably kill you just about as quickly.

Someone show his wife how to long on here and start a part out thread for when he actually drives this thing spiritedly.

All that purple, FAE IS BUILDING LOCOSTS NOW?
I'd look it over for hacked frame rails

Seefo 03-28-2013 09:11 PM

in the 3rd picture, is that a broken control arm already?

Not broken anymore it's welded back together.

Perfect track car for the soon to be ex-wife:idea:

I don't think it's easy to design and build an actual running, driving, homemade racecar, so he's got to be somewhat intelligent to start with. But the shit build quailty I'm seeing on this car would make me not want it. Plus, what does it look like under those panels?

By the time you redo everything to make it safe, you can build one.:dealwithit:

Enginerd 03-28-2013 11:05 PM

Kinda looks like it was outside uncovered. Why so much rust???

Think you got it. It was outside for two years under a tarp. Rust abound. Good question on what is under the panels..... Ill check this weekend.

Here is the kicker.. It was built by a mechanical engineering student for his final project... He passed. Now he works for Kia. I will never buy a Kia.

That's possibly the biggest shit heap I've ever seen on four wheels.

Boost_#ace 03-29-2013 01:03 PM

Take it off-roading... fix what breaks, whatever doesn't must be good nuff.

Video it too, and have them get a better shot of the dash this time.

If it's not dangerous then it's not fun.

Seefo 03-29-2013 02:41 PM

Honestly, at $750, you got a good deal. You will probably have to do some major repairs before I would consider taking it up to speed though.
